Hey folks, I hope all is well. I’m considering a birth year 29 and was looking for some input on model year 1966 options. Any recommendations are appreciated. I favor the 6.5” with some diamond targets. Cokes would be nice but I believe I was born a year too late. What would be a correct presentation case if they even came with one. Look forward to hearing the examples and options offered back then. Thanks

Look for a S serial number 6.5 inch under S300,000 with diamond target stocks. One in the S260,000 to S280,000 range should be 1966 or close. They didn't ship in order though so you'll need a letter to know the exact date and the location to which originally shipped. The very first S&W 44 Magnum I bought was S299,716 with 6.5 inch barrel and diamond target stocks, still have it. Good luck.

You'll be looking for a 3-screw Model 29-2 (introduced in 1962), either blued or nickel, with a s/n in the range that 22highpower provided. Also, the diamond targets were eliminated around 1968, so a 1966 would have the diamonds around the stock screw. There are plenty of 29-2s available, but finding one manufactured in 1966 will required some patience. Good hunting!

Coke bottle stocks were phased out beginning in early 1966 in favor of diamond target stocks made of Goncalo alves so either type of stock panels would be correct for a 29-2 shipped in 1966. The correct mahogany presentation case is what collectors refer to as a "clamshell" case. Top and bottom inserts made of Styrofoam and molded to fit the revolver and its accessories (sight screwdriver, cotton swab, and aluminum cleaning rod with a copper bristled brush attached). The serial number range you should be looking for is S255000 to S275000. Good hunting:)!
