I'm looking at a 1980 in blue 29-2 w/4" barrel that is in pretty good shape very little wear in the usual places (I've only seen pics so far). has the 3 t's and original wooden box w/tools and paper work. the one flaw is one of the rear right notch blade sight is bent forward, current owner bought that way and choose not to try and fix it. my question is how much does it effect the price and also is it easily available?

Yes, the rear blade ("slide") is available. Usually one of the adjustment screws gets broken with replacement but I recall this is avoidable if you are careful. There have been posts here for the height needed, or someone who knows will be along shortly.

I never would of the thought to check amazon but there it was.

I would use the sight as a negotiation point but really if its just the blade, the replacement assembly is only $20-$25 (Amazon and elsewhere). If the price is attractive the damaged sight wouldn't bother me a bit.

they're asking $1200, seems pretty reasonable to me. checked some auction sites to see other prices

Verify that the bent blade shoots to where you want, with your loads, before ordering a replacement blade kit. Be sure you have adequate adjustment range up and down without bottoming or high topping the blade currently on it. Midway and others have online "how to remove/install" tutorials. Pay CLOSE attention to the steps. The specialty tiny pickle fork tool is handy to have for this task.

Yeah, I'm not in any hurry to just rush in replace it until I get my bearings on such a job, thanks for the advice.

Without knowing exactly what is bent, cracked, or damaged, I would not advise anyone on such a repair or fix. Pics would help for sure. If/when you purchase it and get a close look at it, snap some pics. I had a situation with the rear sight, bent right leaf, on a 586 I bought that I easily resolved to my satisfaction. Keep us posted.

I have replaced a couple of sight blades and have at least one sight blade screw kit in the parts box. Rather than replace the blades, on two occasions I just bought the entire sight assembly. It saved a lot of struggle and frustrations on arthritic hands!! It is really not that much more expensive.

Use a gallon baggie

Larry make it look so easy👍

If you decide to replace would suggest you do the removal process inside a gallon zip lock bag or a bigger one.

Once you rotate to have the small indent & spring removed it can shoot out when you least expect it….don't ask me how I know🤦🏼‍♂️

If not located then you'll be waiting for those two small and I mean small parts to arrive.

This should help if you decide to do it yourself...

watched a similar one last night. doesn't look to hard if you take your time, I have the most of the tools. still waiting on a FFL and time to see this piece with the seller. once its in my possession I'm going to load some pics of the damage.

that sounds like a good idea. Midway has one for $53, could still repair the other one.

thanks

Whatever you do about the sight, I would jump on that 29-2. I passed on an identical one for $1,200 a year ago and regret it. There is a very good reason they trade for premium $$.

If you decide to replace the entire sight, you will need to find one first. S&W no longer has them so the secondary market is where you have to go. Ebay or similar. The critical dimension is from the front mount screw back to the elevation screw - they are not all the same.

Twelve seems like a good price depending on the condition of the rest of the gun. I found a -3 for 11 this year and was pretty happy with that. Prices seem to be softening a bit though....

I got a good look at it yesterday, its in very good shape and it does look to be unfired. the seller has owned it for 30 years or so and described all the reasons why he believes it even though there's no way to verify. either way I agree with you about the value.
