Did S&W produce the 3" barrel 24-3 in 1983? Every single one I've come across was 84 or later. Does anyone own or seen one with a 83 serial prefix?

IMHO the serial# vs. year concept is not an exact thing.
We have seen serials way "out of order".
I had a 3" 24-3 LH serial AEL0808 I think I got in 1985.
Yeah they were supposedly made in '84 but who really knows unless you get "the letter".
Sold that gun in '87.

That should read "Made the mistake of selling that gun in 1987." They're really nice guns, and the OP here should consider buying or keeping it. I had one back in that time frame and a friend wanted m to sell it. At the time I was mistaken and thought I had way too many guns. So I sold it to him.

The guy was worse than a lousy shot. He had visions of himself becoming Dirty Harry or something. Lots of just like desert eagles (don't deserve capital letters). But when it came time for him to apply for his concealed carry license, he couldn't even hit the target 7 out of 10. So off he went to the range, every day after work. I'd given him some of my magical reloads, the ones with radar targeting. He needed more so very begrudgingly I turned some over. Then he got the bright idea of buying factory ammo (or he found some). Keep in mind the poor guy was having trouble with semi-autos keeping his shots on a man size target at 7 yards. Suddenly he had all his shots in a pattern, even. So through some act of God he passed his test. Then about 7 or 8 years ago he needed money and was selling all his guns. I got wind of it and bought back the 24 for a $100 more than he'd paid me. Its safe these days. Its going no where, and I won't even allow others to see it. Least they attempt to purloin it.

If the OP does a search, he might find some other posts from owners. I assume his Bday was back in 83, as I don't know any good reason for wanting one because of vintage. A better plan would be to tell others it was his first Bday present, and he's keeping it.

I've never seen one. I've seen plenty of -3's made in 1983, but not a 3-inch one. The oldest 3-inch -3 I've seen shipped in June of 1984. Those are the 100787 guns that are pretty common, six months from '83.

There might be a 3-inch -3 from '83, but I haven't seen it yet. Why is it important, or is it just curiosity?

83 has sentimental value to me and I really like the 3" -3's.
Like you said I have seen -3's from 83 just not the 3" version. The standard catalog is a bit vague as to when they were manufactured, was hoping maybe someone had a 83 that was probably shipped in 84. Not the end of the world though, I'm still gonna buy one eventually no matter the year. Thanks guys
