Last weekend I noticed a friend's 686-no dash wearing what I thought are vintage Herrett's. He didn't know the brand but said his 686 was "an old cop gun". Now I'm curious. What brands and styles of stocks/grips were popular among LE for their 586/686's? I'd like to replace the Hogue's on my 686-4 Plus with a set of round to square checkered walnut stocks (and my S-prefix 28-2 for that matter). Show us your "cop stocks", please!

I've seen numerous NYSP 681's with Pachmayr.

Pachmayrs were the most popular here in the northeast followed by Hogues which were my choice. Some departments required the original target stocks as issued.

In the 70's/80's almost everyone shooting and carrying revolvers ditched the typical wood magnas for pachmayrs both cops and civilians alike. If you are lucky people saved the wood grips and kept them with the gun/ box. A lot of times they literally threw them in the garbage! Some did simply add a T grip. A ton of old cop guns you find today will have rubber grips.

Funny how things go. Back then no one wanted the wood and changed to rubber. Now everyone wants the original wood and doesn't like rubber. Truth be told all my heavy use guns I shoot frequently except one 22 have rubber grips.

Most officers used whatever grips came on whatever revolver they were issued. They just didn't care about such things. I don't have any pictures, but many officers, that did care about such things/gun guys, used rubber grips back in the '70s/ '80s/'90s. They were usually Pachmayrs. I went through the revolver rubber grip thing myself. Not so much anymore..

I think folks would be surprised at how many LEO's aren't gun guys. A number that I worked with hated having to qualify.

In the old days you can tell which cops were "gun guys/gals". If they had Pachmayr grips on their revolver they actually shot frequently. Also I believe it was Massad Ayoob pointed out, and I agree, that bad guys do not want to challenge a cop wearing a Distinguished or Expert Pistol Badge.

Savvy bad guys will not take on a cop that they think will put them down like a mad dog. Two bad guys who killed four Highway Patrolmen, one bad guy told the other bad guy, "We can take them!"

These are my favorites;

As a young cop back in the mid 80s, I happily replaced my 4" 686's duty gun's target stocks with Pachmayr Grippers. They were all the rage back then.
