Some time back I posted about finding a 1st model New Departure .32 with box at the gunshow. From its serial number 200XX I am guessing that it was made in 1890-91. It has all matching numbers and may not have been fired. Despite the fact that its finish was stained a splotchy coppery color, it was in beautiful mechanical condition with well fitting non-medallion pearl grips. My wife fell in love at first sight with the little snapper and I figured that I could clean it up to be presentable. The little pistol was so ugly with its stain that everybody that looked it turned up their nose and walked away (according to the seller). He was getting desperate to sell it so he let it go cheap.

Below are photos after the clean-up. The side plate looks a bit strange, ill fitted, but there are no burrs and it fits even with the frame. I think there may just be some imbedded crud or stain between the plate and frame fitting. All of the dome head pins stand up proud without flattening.

Here is the little pistol with box for your comments and criticism.

Thanks!

Charlie

Great looking gun. I would have bought it too if the price was right. I think the box was originally for a 38 but still neat to have.

That's a good looking little .32 Safety. The pearls are spectacular.

I agree with twaits that the box was probably for a .38 originally, and was pressed into service as a container for your .32 by an owner who remarked the labels. Is there a serial number written on the bottom of the box? By now it might be pretty faint. If you could make it out, that would help you identify the gun that was originally in the box.

If you wanted to fire it, .32 short ammo is still available from specialty ammo dealers.

Nice gun! I also like the old ones with features that drive some people away, so I understand why you went for it. You cleaned it up very nicely.

The box is definitely for a .38 - I have the same box and it is identical.

!st model ND .32

I love orphans too. That's how I probably got the Gold 2nd model. They always surprise you with how much you actually got for so little money. All it takes is a real keen eye, the willingness to do a little work and knowledge of what you're buying.
You did good, looks great!
10/22.

I used Flitz and a very small bit of Mother's Polish when Flitz wouldn't touch the stain. Stain removal took a lot of slow patient work and lots of time. Here are some before photos.
