1St Post..."I'll Take It"

If someone wants to take the risk and buy a gun with no questions asked that is their risk to take and they can post an unconditional "I'll Take It". Since the internet isn't a an actual gun store the waiting in line example doesn't work for me. Even if someone did request pictures or ask questions, each seller is going to have a different definition of who is just "kicking the tires" or is a serious buyer. Either way the person who didn't get the gun they wanted will feel that they lost (I've been there before too on occasion). I personally like the "I'll Take It" system as the best way to sell or buy a gun on a forum.

That's a good way to put it, and contrary to my thinking which has been "I'll take it!" trumps "PM sent" or anything else. I don't know that my thinking will change, but your opinion helps me to see the other side of the argument anyway.

An "I'll Take It" should get it. Posting "PM Sent" don't get it for me. I've lost to many deals after the tire kicker's get finished.

It also depends how the poster words his/her ad.

If a seller correctly and adequately describes his item, then there shouldn't be many questions if any.

I couldn't agree more. That right there would probably solve a large majority of the problems everyone's talking about here.

One thing I don't understand is why some sellers won't post photos. You know they have photos because they'll say "email for photos", and if they can figure out how to attach photos to an email, they can figure out how to post them on a forum- it's not any more difficult or time-consuming (in fact, it saves time rather than sending multiple photos to multiple different parties via email). So, if they have them, why not post them and avoid all the questions and unnecessary back and forth?

Shoot your "I'll take it" now, and ask questions later.

Lots of good points on both sides, but I think the free market is working as it should. Smith & Wesson guns and accessories are hot. When things are priced correctly, they sell quickly. I sell Real Estate and see people win & lose deals on a regular basis. I'm very glad that Real Estate deals have to be in writing in my state, so that terms and conditions can be clear and negotiable.

I think the seller has the ultimate right to try to get the most $$ as quickly as he can. If a seller / forum member didn't need the money quickly, it could be polite to specify extra terms about selling to forum members, # of posts, etc., but I don't see that happening, as mosts sellers of anything just want their cash, and rightfully so.

From a legal standpoint, there are verbal contracts for personal property which can be enforceable in a court of law, and an internet forum timestamp could be proof of a contract. I think the rules of the forum would apply, so if Lee says we have to say "purple giraffe" then that's what we have to say. Now if you really are the first to say the phrase, and the item gets sold out from under you, it does imply a breach of contract on behalf of the seller, but sellers know that it likely wouldn't be taken to court over the cost of a gun, so ya just win some and lose some.

Just my 2 cents. Good thread.

Nothing wrong at all. It's not even a written rule to my knowlege. As the mod said, "Seller sets the rules." Some people actually specify "First posted I'll take , takes it."

If somebody does sell an item out from under an "I'll take it" through PM, there is always gonna be some cynical *** like myself who will figure the seller reneged on a deal for a better offer post the deal being closed. The seller needs to determine if he or she is OK with that.

A person makes an offer.

Another person accepts said offer.

Yes. It really is that simple.

Suppose you had closed a deal on a gun at your LGS & I was standing behind you & offered more cash & the guy took it?

You'd both get smacked. ;)

I have now probably bought 30 guns on this forum. All deals were started by me with a simple "I will take it". There is many a time where there was a lot of PM sent postings prior. A few times I did not get the gun because the PM's were completed and the sale finished.

Free market -

Owner -"I have an item for sale"
Customer - " I'll take it, here's your money"

Me World -

Owner -
"I have an item for sale"
POTENTIAL Customer - "I'll probably buy it" (which means)

" I might buy it"

"I'm thinking about buying it"

"I could buy it (or maybe not) after you jump through some hoops so I make sure I'm getting a good deal"

"I'll might buy it if everything looks perfect to me and I'm in a good mood"

"I want it but I have to see what my wife says first so I need time to convince her"

"I've been looking for one of those and I'll have the money next Juvember and I'll let get it"

"I want it if a,b,c, and d and I should get first consideration before everyone else because my mother always let me go first"

"I deserve a good deal and if I work this just right maybe you'll take $5 less"

"I want to stall your sale until I make up my mind if I want it"

Yada, yada, yada, . . . . . meh.

Money talks and . . . well, you know the rest.:p

I agree with the "I will take it trumping all other communications". When I list something I try to remember to put the I will take it language in the listing. If you take a chance and buy something without great pictures, or information on it you may lose money by buying something that is in poor condition, or you might get an registered magnum for a beater price. You make your choice and take your chance. Some other forums do not abide by the "I will take it" rule, and have more problems because of that. If you used the PM sent rule the seller could preview all PM's before replying, and pick someone that offered a higher price, similar to sealed bidding in an auction.
Lastly here is an example of what foolishness goes on in some other forums that do not use the " I will take it" rule. I had a link here , but decided to remove it. I am glad we have the rules here that we do, some one has to watch over us looneys.

Blah blah blah...here's what really pisses me off. I was looking for an Encore barrel and had a WTB ad posted (different forum). This guy sends me a purchase offer to the effect of: I have a "blank" you can have it for $150 shipped. Let me know if want to see a pic.

This happens on one evening. I respond to the guy immediately that I want to see a pic and that I am very interested.

The guy responds back to me about 26 hours later and says: Sorry, it sold last night.

I'm still angry over that.

If I tell you that you can have something for $, then I'm not selling it to anyone else until you say yes or no.

Whaddaya want for tha horse?
Can you send more pics?
:p

Well, if you want your jaws to really get frosted, try being a first, 'I'll take it' only to drive 20 miles home and find out someone offered more money and got it. It DOES happen. Also, just how many photos do you have to see? Try playing 60 questions and then having to start all over with another buyer. Yeah, that happens as well. :)

Ya we know. Try answering some of the questions and posting a decent picture and perhaps you would not need so many questions.

If someone listed a brand new, still in box and factory grease XYZ handgun, there would be half a dozen people wanting to see a pic before they could make up their mind.

It is absolutely amazing ANYTHING ever got sold from a newspaper ad or Shotgun News, there are no pics!

True story, a neighbor just bought a pre 64 Winchester model 70 for $300 from one of those nasty classified ads in a newspaper. He called the guy and bought it sight unseen on the phone, then drove directly to the seller and took possession. Ya snooze, ya lose.
