Hello bottom feeder fans,

I am an active poster on the wheel gun side and therein lies most of the passion, and collection, however I'm not really a stranger to semi's having owned, sold, traded several 1911A1's, Browning HP's, Lugers, Colts over the last bucoo years, but I just came into my first Smith & Wesson brand.

It is a Model 39-2, in very decent condition as far as I can tell. For what it's worth came with blue Bangor Punta box and some documents, and a well used cleaning rod that I'm pretty sure wasn't even used on this pistol and it is too long for the box.

So.......general feel for this 1977 pistol (per SCSW 4th) is that I like it. It has a real great feel when held in right hand (strong side) and my Browning Hi-Power held in left, or even vice versa.
With a couple snap caps in the Smith trigger break is very, very "late" compared to the BHP (almost like it's touching the trigger guard). The alloy frame and 4 inch barrel blend very nicely in my case making the sight picture better than my BHP on these old eyes. The stippled back strap feels great too.

Some questions that I know you guys (and gals) can help with.

I've heard rumors about alloy frame cracking issues...I don't see any, but are people talking hundreds or thousands of rounds down the pipe? Where on the frame do you inspect and what exactly are you looking for (hairline, black coating disturbance, crack propagation path, etc.).

Another question, did these guns ship from factory with one or two mags? Where best to get a spare that isn't worn out spring wise? When I hit the range for pistol exercise I don't like to spend all my time loading mags so preferably 2 is minimum, more if I got em, and since the BHP is double stack, this will be more like my 1911A1's or the old Luger byf and 8 rounds go so quick.

Those of you that shoot the M39-2...what factory ammo (brand and bullet weight/style) does it like for paper punching/plinking? Dislike? I usually run whatever is cheaper today if I'm low on ammo.

My next range outing is to definitely leave the wheel guns at home:eek: and take both the BHP and the new-to-me Model 39-2 and give them a good side-by-side functional exercise program and to see what the real time results are on paper. Neither of these semi's are in my EDC rotation cause I don't do rotation (same old J frame for decades), but again the Smith feels like it's going be fun, maybe more so than the BHP.

Sorry for the ramble, and the crummy pics, but I'm hoping that this whole Forum is not made up of "wheel" gunners only and that some of you will pass on some of that valuable know-how and "been there, done that" experience.....so I can get the T-shirt too.:D

M39 ammo choices

Just an update to my post above. I checked my ammo stash and in 9 mm Luger, I have 500 rounds factory Winchester 124 grain FMJ (box says 1140 fps), and 500 rounds of CCI Blazer Brass, 115 grain FMJ (box says 1125 fps). The Browning Hi-Power likes both of them equally well for plinking and target duty, not sure about the new-to-me Model 39-2.

I'm primarily interested in any ammo you folks have found that may result in Failure-to-Feed, stovepipe(s) on extraction so I can avoid those issues.

Thanks in advance for any answers and/or comments.

The 39-2 is a terrific handgun. They shipped with 2 magazines.
Be aware that they did not have a drop safety which could cause a discharge if dropped on the muzzle with a chambered round and the manual safety in the fire position. The second generation pistols incorporated the drop safety. I carried and shot ( a lot) of 39-2`s and never a hint of the aluminum frame cracking.
Congrats on acquiring a fine S&W 9mm pistol.
Last note. It took me a while, with practice to get great accuracy. That was me adapting not the guns fault.

Charlie B., that 39-2 is in nice shape. With numbered box and paper, a real plus. Sn. indicates early 1979 ship. Ref. mag., a spare will have a plastic follower and marked bottom plate. Used mags usually work OK. Im finding the price is going up as the gun is gathering popularity. Ammo? All mine
eat any thing. No hot stuff!

Thanks all for the comments...and enabling!

You folks have it right....I didn't even think this slippery slope actually had two sides to it!

Dang..........I bought that M39-2 package for $450 OTD just because it was sitting there looking so lonely in with a bunch of Colt SAA at $3,500 and up, and some S & W long toms at $1,500 and up, and this guy stuffed in a back corner along with that too long, well used wire coat hanger cleaning brush, so I was "forced" to make an offer using the coat hanger terminology for effect.

I really thought "well...OK....another one to buy reasonable, hold a few years, see if maybe flip it later, or use as trading material......but......the more I pick it up and handle it, the more I'm thinking...this is one fun gun that I can really enjoy and maybe the wife too with the smaller, less recoil pills (compared to my snubbies with 357 or even Plus P)...

Like said above.........I know it starts with one, so heck...I just found myself reading Fibbie threads (1076), S&W 40 things...****.......I may not pick up any of my wheel guns again.
May even dust off the 1943 Ithaca and take her out for some exercise, but FIRST.......GOT TO run a few mags through that 39.

ALL this S&W stuff is highly addictive! But guess I'm preaching to the choir, or maybe you are preaching to me...either way..I'm all in.

Thanks for the tips...wonder if Ma's cookie jar has enough for those Midway extra mags.....reviews look great.

Model 39-2

The S&W 39-2 had a few issues but I never experienced or heard of any cracked frames on the 39 or 59. I had Department armorers praise the model 39 for how well it held up to sustained shooting compared to K Frame revolvers which would go out of time.

When I went through the Academy one of the Range Officers was an excellent shooter and had been on the Department Pistol team many years. He out shot the best shooter from my Academy class shooting another Cadets random model 439 upside down. At 25 yards he had all X's in the 10 ring on a round circular NRA pistol target.

One of the more common failures were the breakage of the safety/decocker but most of these failures were on pistols which had been shot extensively.

My personally owned model 39-2 had to have the hammer replaced early but I suspect it had improper heat treating. Otherwise my 39-2 has been very reliable and accurate with most ammo.

I had been unable to locate a S&W 39/439 magazine locally so I took a chance and ordered a ProMag magazine for my used 439 which came with only one magazine. This ProMag magazine looks like the original model 39 magazine with the plastic follower. The only visual difference is the metal floor plate is a little longer than my S&W 39/439 mags. I purchased a SS magazine for a 3906 and it functions but I wanted another blued magazine.

I have only used the ProMag a couple of times but so far it has been gtg. At least now I have three magazines for my 39-3 and 439.

Here are links to the S&W 3906 and ProMag model 39 mags I purchased.

Great gun and welcome to the dark side! It should shoot anything that's a 9mm para CTG. Remember your BHP is a SA only and this is DA/SA so they are not the same animal. I have many model 39s and they all shoot well. They are also very nice on the eyes.
I jump between revolver sub forums and this one often. Heck as long as it goes bang I am in..
Enjoy and come back with a range report.

A great alternative for magazines are these "repro" mags from Numrich (Guns Part Corp): Magazine, 9mm, 8 Round, Blued, New Reproduction | Gun Parts Corp.

I have several of them, they have functioned flawlessly in my 39-2. Numrich did a great job with these reproductions, they faithfully matched the old style factory mags with the "x" metal followers so closely, that the only difference is these is the missing "S&W" marking on the mag butt plate.

The S&W Model 39-2 is a really nice single stack 9x19mm pistol. I had one back in the 1980's and then sold it. Got the itch to have one again and ended up with a Model 439, which is basically a 39-2 with the addition of a firing pin block.

My 439 seems to be a little more accurate with 124 and 147 grain loads, but 115 grain JHP loads also perform well. I'd stay away from the +P stuff and change the recoil spring every 5000 rounds. Cracked receivers are rare for S&W pistols, but a weak recoil spring and/or hot ammo are certainly going to make a broken receiver more likely.

That's a beauty, and your price was very reasonable in that condition w/box.

+1 on staying away from hot loads... one of the improvements that S&W did on the 2nd/3rd gen pistols was to reinforce the frame area around the slide stop lever.

There were some issues of cracks extending from the hole up to the frame rail. I don't recall that being an occurrence on the x39 single stack, but there were definitely occurrences with the x59 double stack frames, in fact it happened to gun writer Skeeter Skelton while doing a gun test.

Besides, I see no reason to subject these classics to +P when there are plenty of newer guns to torture. ;)
