2 Inherited revolvers. Some information and direction.

I inherited 2 revolvers from family members and other then caliber and make I know very little about them. Any information would be great.

1st one is a S&W .38 Special Nickel Plated Revolver Serial # 3536XX. 5 Screw, swing out hand ejector.



2nd one is a S&W .32 Long Ctg. Serial # 1940XX. 5 Screw, swing out hand ejector.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully the pictures work.

Welcome! The first one is a .38 Military & Police round butt model from the early 1920s. It appears to have a set of factory mother of pearl stocks, uncommon at least.

The second is a .32 Regulation Police from the mid-1910 decade. The stocks on this one are aftermarket. Others should be along with more information and perhaps more specific ages.

Welcome to the Forum. First, you have a 38 Military & Police, 4th Change revolver that would have left the factory around 1920. It has factory mother-of-pearl stocks and was over-buffed and refinished at some point in its life.

The second revolver is a 32 Hand Ejector, 5th Change, or a Model 1903 I frame revovler. It would have likely been shipped from the factory around 1913-1914. It has been reblued and has a set of plastic stocks, maybe Franzite, which are not original. My guess is that is is a standard Model 1903 and not a Regulation Police, but tell us if the serial number is located on the front strap of the butt frame or on the bottom of the frame?

Welcome from NW PA, try and get whatever information that you can from the previous caretakers or family.

Serial # 3536XX - SN 353534 shipped 9/15/1920

Serial # 1940XX - I don't have a very close SN on my list, but from bracketing between those I do have, it very likely shipped 1912-13.

Factory original MOP grips (with medallion) would be very desirable if not damaged as yours is.

As both appear to have been refinished, collector interest would be low.

Both were daily carry guns for great grandfathers on either side of the family, so I don't imagine I'll be to get rid of them anytime soon.

Excellent! Glad to hear you say that. Family heirloom guns like that are something to treasure. I wish I had any of my grandfather's guns on either side of the family. Too many people only look at them as a "thing" with some kind of monetary value. I look at them as heritage items and once they leave the family the chances of them ever coming back are slim to none. GOOD FOR YOU!

As Gary mentioned above, the .32 is a model 1903 with a round butt grip frame. The plastic stocks are of the correct style for the Regulation Police.

Thanks, The grips on the 32 never looked right to me, they don't fit that good. I assumed they were the wrong style. I plan to look for something that fits a little better for any shooting I may do.

Original stocks on your 32 HE would have most likely been black hard rubber round butt like those on the attached Model 1903. What you want to look for on ebay for a set of I frame stocks, but 38 Double Action, and 38 Perfected DA are the same. ebay termonology is "grips" not stocks. Vintage Gun Grips sells reproductions that will also work.
