CMMG conversion works well enough from most all reports I have seen. Twist rate of an AR15 barrel isn't ideal for .22lr but shoots adequately.

My opinion is that it makes sense for guys who want more trigger time with their rifle set up exactly as it is but are looking to save money shooting rimfire. Otherwise, the 15-22 can be purchased for around $300 and you won't have to dirty your AR with rimfire.

I have a CMMG dedicated .22lr upper. Love it.

It was a bit on the balky side, which is sort of to be expected with "conversions" and some of the indifferent .22 ammo around. I ran about 3-400 rounds of good ammo through a Bushmaster I had at the time. Accuracy was--meh. After most sessions which were about 50 rounds or so I made it a point to CLEAN THE BORE. Solvent, brass brush, patches, the whole GI procedure.

Came the day when a round apparently keyholed on target and left an odd entrance hole. I ceased fire and took a long hard look down the bore to see if it was clear; it was. I finished the session, went home, and in running the brass brush down (from the breech, with bore guide) noticed an enlarged area in the area of the gas port. Suspecting the worst I took it to a gunsmith friend of mine who confirmed that I indeed had a bulged barrel. I never figured out exactly HOW it happened, only that it DID. I then had the opportunity to learn how to replace the original 5.56 barrel with one I liked better anyway.

I dumped the CMMG unit and bought a 15-22. That was about 4-5 years ago; I am coming up on 6000 rounds through it. NO issues. There is the occasional dud round which is common; the action needs a cleanup and relube about every 500 or so rounds; and that's it.

Counting my 15-22, I have bought another 4 of these rifles for gifts. I like the new Sporter forearms, but my "old" carbine still works fine. The Bushnell TRS-25 on it makes it a dandy sub caliber version of a carbine with an ACOG.

I also have a CCMG dedicated upper. Actually purchased as a complete rifle, with the idea of buying a separate 5.56mm upper. Love it. Also have the M&P 15-22... love it as well! The 15-22 will run longer without needing more oil to keep things moving, but both work well. I prefer my CMMG, as it weighs and feels close to the same as my other ARs, but the 15-22 mimics an AR manual of arms right out of the box.

As far as Bat Guano's issue with the bulged barrel, that is ammo related... obviously fired after a previous round lodged in the barrel... has absolutely nothing to do with the CMMG unit.

The only issue that I have had with mine was after I first got it, it would fire without the bolt being fully in battery. After it broke in and wore the phosphate coating down in a couple of areas, it worked fine.

Usually that happens when the operator presses the trigger and only hears a click. Figures it was just a dud and pulls back on the charge handle to eject the round but doesn't notice only the case came out absent the bullet (bullet stuck in barrel). Charges another round and fires it...

Just an opinion for consideration but certainly not one worthy of argument...
For my purposes (and perhaps for others as well), I found out a long time ago if you want a .22, get a .22. I guess a dedicated outfit might be very close.

I also bought a complete CMMG rifle with a dedicated 22 upper. I ordered mine with a standard lower like on any AR. I've seen a few with a plastic buffer tube and no buffer, I also wanted to be able to put any AR upper on it.

Only problem I ever had was the firing pin broke into 3 pieces. Never could figure how that happened, but I sent a pic of it to CMMG and in about a week they sent me 2 free ones.

I like mine so much it was one of the few AR's I have that I stamped the lower on. Shoots great suppressed too.

Funny that you mention this... I took mine apart for a good cleaning a few weeks back and found the same thing... the firing pin had broken into three pieces. Called CMMG and they sent me two new ones, with springs. Had found on the net that this was common with the older, round head firing pins.

From what I've seen, the compete upper option seems to be the better option over the insert. I went the "buy a .22LR" route because I needed more than one rifle but if I was to look at just doing a conversion, it would be a complete upper. Partly because I'm not sure how .22LR ammunition would handle a 1:7 twist barrel but also because .22LR ammo is a dirty round and I don't want my gas tube plugged from the residue it leaves.
