All I have been able to find locally for my .22 Hornet is CCI magnum small rifle primers. Will I have consistency problems if I use these? What about using small pistol primers (standard non-magnum)? I plan to start off using 40 grain Nosler ballistic tips and 2400 powder.

I don't think I'd use magnum primers in the Hornet. All I have ever used were standard small rifle CCIs or Winchester Small Rifle with 2400, IMR 4227, and Li'l Gun. I (being the cautious type) would travel or wait for WSR primers to show up.

BTW, I always had great luck with the bullet you're using. Also, the Hornady 40gr Vmax.

Good luck.

i have use small pistol primer cci in 22 hornet ,no problem in either 40 and 45 grs sierrra with vit n110 the gun was a brno fox

Checking my notes, I find that my most accurate load is the 40 gr. Sierra Soft Point Hornet, 12.0 grs. Winchester 296 and the Winchester WSP. But these are the older Winchester pistol primers that were plated and in my experience tougher than what they make today. My other noteworthy load is the old Barnes 45 gr. XBT with 12.4 grs. Winchester 296, but I use CCI small rifle primers with this load. This is a hot load and the pistol primers do not hold the pressure as well. That little X Bullet moves at 2903 FPS out of my brother's Contender.

Small pistol primers are the ones to use in hornets. That is all I use.

I settled on the Federal #100 sm pistol primer for the Hornet and also the 218 Bee.

Those small cases and relatively fast powders do not require all that much in the way of ignition.

Shot to shot variation is better and so is the 100 yd. accuracy.
