22 magnum Jet

I am getting ready to load some Jet for one of my 53's. I am using once brass that has been fired 1 or 2 times. I have a new set of RCBS dies. Do you always full length size as opposed to neck sizing? I have been using alcohol to clean the completed cartridges as well as swabbing out the cylinders. Anyone using anything else for degreasing? How about a favorite load. I never load at the top and these will be used at the range for fun shooting for myself and anyone else who is around and wants to try it out.

I have never heard of anyone neck-sizing Jet brass, but it might be possible.

As to cleaning the chambers, I have heard of Acetone being suggested but have never used it, or alcohol, or lighter fluid, for that matter. All I have had to do to make the gun function is keep the chambers clean and dry. Nothing special, in my case.

I have had a lot more trouble making my Jets shoot as accurately as they do with factory ammunition than I have with assembling loads that function without binding up the gun. Start with a clean gun and keep is clean as you are shooting.

I've been loading for the Jet since the mid-1970s and never did run into the case sticking problems that many have... I'll have to check my notes but H110 and Unique were two powders I used.

As to bullets, the best in terms of accuracy was the original 40 grain Remington SP. The only other bullets left besides the Hornady Jet bullet are the two .223 Hornet bullets from Sierra in 40 and 45 grain. The Hornady bullet has not shot that well for me either.

A fun thing to do with the Jet is open up a few flash holes, use Small Rifle Magnum primers and put inverted .22 pellets in the case mouth...you have a neat indoor plinking load. I have some of the old S&W pellets that have a very small waist and they seem to work best...

Anyway, if you bum around on this forum, you will see more than a few comments about loading the Jet. Jet loading is akin to deciding whether blondes or brunettes are better company - a subject best handled on one's own, in most cases. I have never had my best results (speaking here of accuracy) with slow powders. In addition to the usual 2400, 4227, and H110/W296, you might also branch out and try HS6, and others in that burning-rate range.

On a similar topic, and back to our friend in Mexico, it might be of some interest to members to know that Hamilton Bowen is something of a Jet enthusiast, and one of the more recent interests he has turned his talents to is re-creating the Jet-length K-frame cylinder. Having these parts available in blank form should be a boon to gun hacks looking to make the ubiquitous .256 Winchester M19, or similar, and of course the blank could also make a nifty .22LR cylinder for those lacking one for their M53 and so inclined. Not a cheap prospect, but good things rarely are. Jets are really too nice a gun to just leave lying around.

Hi ycr this is what i load for my Model 53.
First off clean brass if dirty make sure you use a good lub on the cases before depriming and sizing the brass.
Second i trim my brass to 1.278" because there tapered they will stretch over time and makes ejecting the empty cases much easier after firing.

The recipe i use is 11.3 grs. of H-110 pushing a Hornady .222" 40 gr.Jet #2210 .22 Caliber Bullet with Winchester Small Mag or Regular Pistol Primers this load works good for me i,m hitting Silhouettes at 100 yards with ease. I use rubbing alcohol to clean bullets and the cylinder before each shoot and haven't had any issues of it locking up. Have fun enjoy loading this round Rick...
