I' am looking for a .22 semi auto pistol for my grandkids ages 8 and 7. Any suggestions?

Don’t limit yourself to contemporary pistols such as those described above.

You can find great shooting Colt Woodsman’s that are a bit finish challenged for very reasonable prices if you keep your eyes open. High Standard military and model B pistols are also great pistols often found for very reasonable prices

These are classic pistols that are much nicer than contemporary 22’s.

I'd second the Browning 1911-22; it's probably the most kid-fitting of my 22 pistols. While I love my Model B, it might be a little heavy for extended shooting for a 7 year old, depending on how strong they are. Everything is down-sized on the 1911-22, which kids seem to appreciate.

If you can find one, the S&W 2213/2214 models are excellent guns. I bought my son a brushed nickel 2214 when he was five years old. Thirty years later his two children are shooting it.

You know when you ask a question like this you will get 1000 different replies.
Just shoot light loads in something you already own.

I worked with my 8 year old this year on developing basic firearms safety and firing skills. The thing that shocked me from that experience was not so much the action, # of rounds, etc. It was the weight of the firearm in his hands. He was really adverse to the heavier guns and struggled, so my Marlin 15Y and m&p 15-22 pistol were great rifles to start with. I just loaded a couple rounds at a time. For a pistol it was my Kimber Rimfire Target 1911. The lightweight alloy frame and slide worked well for him. He has shot my Volquartsen Scorpion and was okay but the front heavy nature and 6” barrel seemed to reduce his ability to control the pistol as confidently.

My son and three daughters all learned on my Ruger Mkll. I used the front V-rest from my rifle vise as a support and to teach them muzzle discipline until they could hold it unassisted.

Both of my kids started with my K22. My daughter was small enough I had to help her hold it up. But, limiting them to one shot at a time, (double action was too stiff for them) made them concentrate on the sights and learn to hit the target.

Yea, get your head examined. No way 7-8 yr olds have the attention span for a semi auto pistol. A millisecond and you can have life changing accident. It’s not really an accident because it could have been prevented. I don’t think a kid can be to young to learn to shoot. They got to crawl before they can walk.

I might have phrased it differently, but I agree with the sentiment.
Kids are kids. They lack a lot of mental facilities that come with maturity. Guns aren't toys, and selecting one for them should not be based on entertainment value. Handguns in particular are subject to all kinds of unitentional handling errors.

Start them off right with a bolt action single shot .22 rifle. Make sure they get safety instruction first, then get marksmanship instruction. Once they display the ability to safely get into the prone position and can operate the action, then they're ready for a single loaded cartridge.

It's really surprising that it took this far into this thread before someone addressed the essential fundamentals.

Different times .....I was taught to shoot a semi when I was 7....pistol and rifle....as were my friends...1958,,,,we never had a NG or AG....and all these years later...I still have not had a NG or AG....didnt seem to be an issue if raised right...

Nothing wrong with starting a kid at this age with a BB or pellet gun to teach proper handling and safety with.

Kind of like giving a kid a Toyota Corolla vs V8 Mustang for their first car.

Find a revolver, load one round only at a time, and let them shoot it single action. Never give them the opportunity to handle it loaded without you have a hand on them. That age is too young, IMO, to grasp the inherent dangers of a firearm, and whatever you tell them will not stay with them more than a few minutes. Even in Scouts, the kids are 9 or 10 before they learn to shoot. A semiauto could work, but loading one at a time in one is a pain.

TOO YOUNG.

BULL.
I was 6 when my dad started teaching me. Every kid is different, some learn younger than others. But you cannot judge a kid too young if you have never even met them. That is the job of the parents and theirs alone. The OP is asking for suggestions, not permission. He has already deemed them capable of responsible learning.
Now, for my suggestions, I recommend a Ruger SR22 for the size. It accommodates small hands easily. The Walther P22 is very similar and usually a little less expensive. Or a Heritage .22 revolver, they have assisted countless young shooters.
