22 shot comparison

Shot loads have there place. They can be used to shoot vermin in places you can't use a bullet. Penetration is minimal, in common framing lumber at 6' they only penetrate the diameter of the shot at the most. In areas that this is not a concern a bullet is the better choice. No comments on the wing shooters of bugs.

I live in Florida and large rats are a fact of life here. I have a smooth bore Savage Mk II for rats but most often I use it for a finishing shot when a trap doesn't finish a rat. Solid shot wouldn't be appropriate on my back deck due to noise and potential damage.

Thanks for saving all 3 of us wing shooters from the embarrassing comments. As a non vermin shooter,:D I will extend the same courtesy :D

Dragonflies and Praying Mantis are very important hunters which should never be killed. I think in some States killing a Praying Mantis is illegal. They eat harmful bugs so they should not be killed.

I think the same thing about snakes. I've never killed one on purpose. I have been around them all life, never been a problem. I have a Mantis on my window right now.

I have used the crimped .22 shot shells and a 6 in. pistol too shoot field mice and snakes when bush hogging. Several years ago I found I can reload .410 shells cheaper than I could buy .22 shot shells so I switched guns. Larry

I kill any poisonous snakes around my property. Rattlesnakes are actually good eating if fried up like chicken :) 22 shotshells work, but I prefer 44 or 45 shot capsules for maximum effectiveness.

I hunted snakes for $$hides a few years. Copper Heads in SE Ohio. Was in a couple situations with multiple snakes where it was necessary to shoot. I shot a 16" Copper Head at about 3' with CCI shot cap out of 5.5" Ruger S-6 and didn't stop it from leaving the immediate area. I didn't like to shoot snakes and damage hide. After that I just carried HPs. A hit on snake with bullet will have it twisting up and will not be in strike mode. I don't think I ever shot a snake out of need.

I see the CCI snakeshot everywhere. Last year a local retailer had the crimped Winchester kind, which I'd always heard was more powerful and "more better".

Having both, I finally got around to a head-to-head comparison. Two identical pop cans, at about 3 feet, one took 2 rounds of CCI and the other 2 rounds of Winchester.

Results as shown. I'm surprised! Guess I'll be carrying the CCI.
Nice heater!

I have used both crimped and plastic capped .22 for dispatching animals (rats and ground squirrels) caught in a live trap. Larger .38 special CCI have taken a couple rattlers in the yard. With grandkids running around the property, I don't mind shooting a rattler.

22 shot shells

When I was a kid on the farm one of my jobs was tending to the chickens. The sparrows would get in the hen house to roost and get chicken feed. I tried those crimped shot shells and they were absolutely worthless. Couldn't get close enough to a sparrow. The gun was Dad's Winchester Model 62.

Many years later as Dad was feeling ready to go, he told me to go to the basement and find that same Model 62. It was jammed with a crimped shot brass. Dad was using it to get the squirrels out of his bird feeders. I took it home with me and maybe someday I'll try to rehabilitate it.

But carpenter bees are always fair game!

Yep. Once my supply of .22 rat shot ran out and I saw how expensive it is now. I took to load .38 hulls with 1.5 grs of Bullseye. A card board wad and fill with #9 or #12 shot and a top wad. I am terror on them around my shop, barn and house. As many as I shoot I can't afford the .22 shot cartridge. A pic I shown before.
BTW This load is deadly on snakes/rats at 6-8 ft.

I was full grown before I heard them called anything but rat shot. Heard that for generations before I read "shotshell" on the package. My grandfather used to let us kids loose with a single shot .22 Remington bolt action and rat shot to hunt doves. I've actually downed a few jumped up at short range. He wisely didn't trust us to wingshoot safely with .22 bullets. I chased a squirrel out of my attic a few years ago with a Kit Gun full of rat shot in my pocket. I was ready to wage war with the beast, but luckily I didn't have to shoot holes in anything.

Yesterday I inadvertently loaded two crimped birdshot into my semi-auto for some practice. I found an old jar with mixed .22 in it, and I loaded 15 rounds into the mag with the two birdshot mixed in. Of course, the two rounds did not work the action and that is when I discovered the birdshot. For fun, I checked the target, placed at 10 yds. from the porch, and found the 8"x11" paper with about an even spread of the smallest holes. Lethal at that distance, I doubt it very much, but I think I will keep the shots within a foot or two when using the shot.
OP, interesting post and thank you.

There was a rumor about 22 shot out of rifled barrels when I was young. The lead shot immediately melts into the rifling ruining the 22 gun. (I didn't start the rumor but every time I see 22 shot I think of it).

The only ammunition available around here with the ammunition drought has been 22 shot.

I have a Mossberg 12 gauge Shockwave which is excellent dispatching rattlesnakes too close to our home.

We live rural, our cat catches field mice and brings them home to show us. When he sees us he always meows and off scampers the field mouse. He is a good old persons cat, lol.

I killed a rattler one time with a 22 CCI shot shell. Had to get too close to get the job done. Would have been better off with a big rock.
When we are at the ranch in the warmer seasons, I pack one of my 38 or 357 revolvers with 2 snake shot loads and 3 or 4 hp rounds.
I have no issue with killing poisonous snakes at the ranch. We have tons of them and bird dogs get run there a lot. Mostly mine. Were it not for the dogs I would leave them alone. But when you consider the cost of a well bred bird dog, training and they are my faithful companions. I am not willing to endure any more risk than I have to from the belly crawlers.

Amen. One side note on CCI 22 shot loads. I had a problem with a varmit I didn't want to kill tearing up my trash. Had cartridges in a rifle. From about 25" I popped it. Planning on giving it a good sting. Took it in ribs, capsule failed to open and killed it dead.

At 25 inches what were you expecting ...
