Hi Folks,
I'm interested in buying a 22 auto for plinking. I have two in mind. One is a used Browning Buckmark fluted 7" and the other is a new S&W 22A . The used Browning would be about $400.00 (no box or papers) OTD, the Smith is new and would be about $300.00 OTD. Any experance and or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a S&W 22A I have not had a problem out of it yet . I take it to the range every time I go .Remington Golden bullets are the only thing I have found to not feed correctly .I like the fact that I can change the barrel length at anytime .

I've had the 22A for over a year now...it's a good value. The Grandsons and myself have put many rounds through it.

My favorite is a Browning Challenger, the Buckmark is next.

They're both good guns. Which one fits your hand the best? You are going to be down to personal preference.

I've got a Beretta U22 Neos with the 6" barrel nad it is very accurate. It doesn't have a problem shooting cheap ammo but I use either CCI mini mags or CCI stingers. the gun looks a little strange but feels great in your hand. It's easy to clean. got all the features I like. the safety is a little stiff but getting better the more I shoot it. The good part is that they are only a fraction of the cost of a Browning, Ruger, or S&W. They make them in 4-6 and 7" lengths. Nice rail on top for scopes, red dots or whatever. I love mine.

Take a look at the Ruger 22/45, you can easily find one for $250 or so, has all the controls (slide release, safety and magazine release) in the same position as a 1911 .45, very accurate and reliable. I have one, the target version with 5" heavy barrel, and have put over 20,000 trouble free rounds through it since 2006.

I did wear out a magazine recently, Ruger replaced it for free. They give you two with the pistol, I used one way more than the other and wore out the slide stop catch on the magazine, that was with 20,000 rounds...

Excellent advice, as personal fit and preference are paramount in these "Ford vs. Chevy" questions.

The Ruger seems to also have a stellar reputation, and I'd like to have one some day.

This Browning Buckmark fits my hand very well, but an S&W very well may also. Given the price difference, I'd be pretty tempted to go with the S&W - if it felt right in the hand.

Both nice choices, but for a Franklin less and with a factory warranty, I'd go for the Smith.
