Hi fellas. I am a new member here but life long shooter. I have a .22 I am asking you to help me identify and steer me towards a set of larger grips. This revolver was my Grandpa's and l remember shooting it with him over the years but never questioned him on its history. I think he bought it new. Its a bit small for my hand and l have tried to find a set of grips locally, but am unsuccessful. I thank you for your time and hope you can help or steer me to some.

Welcome! You likely have a J frame called a model 34 or Kit Gun, but there are several possibilities. Please have a look at this post (if you can't get photos to upload) and let us know:

I have no luck posting pics. Thanks for the link. There is no crane model #. Butt ser# 36161. 6 inch barrel is pinned. There are three screws on the right side. The sights are adjustable. .22 long rifle ctg. It has small grips that do not go up to the trigger guard. Square butt. I know its not j frame as those grips are too big. Thanks!
A 6" small frame S & W .22 LR revolver with an adjustable rear sight pretty much narrows the ID to a .22/32 Target, after 1957 named the model 35. This was built on the so-called Improved I frame (coil instead of leaf mainspring), and this may be the reason J frame stocks will not fit, as the I is about 1/8" shorter in the grip frame.

You can still use the j-frame target grips as found on the modern version of that gun, the Model 35. They make it look kinda like a little K-22.

Based upon your description I would suspect you have a model 35 or maybe a "pre-model 35" (Model of 1953 .22/32 Target). A model 35 should be a square butt. I am not sure about the butt, round or square, on the improved I-frame of a pre-model 35.
If you can confirm the frame size is a J-framed and if you're not picky about the grips and just want bigger it looks like Hogue and Pachmayr make grips that would work. Finding S&W J-frame target grips might take some effort. A quick internet search shows other sources for wood target grips for J-frame, for example handgrips.com.

As others have said your revolver is either a pre.M-35 or a model marked 35 usually with a square butt since you did not affirm yours matching the Heavy Frame Target. The Factory made target stocks that will fit the square or round butt for the improved "I" or the "J" frame are ideal for the small frame with the 6" barrel. They are available either checkered or smooth and their price has risen to the $60.00 To $70.00 value for a good condition set. More for new & unused!

Hi Guys. I've been busy researching and reading your replies and found that mine is a pre model 35 as it is not marked as model 35 on the crane. It must be a .22/32 target. I found some Pachmayer Presentation grips for a j frame square butt for$20 and bought them. They arrived today in very good used condition and they fit! So its an improved I frame. The hammer has quite a large tang that butts on the grip whe single action cocked, so that will take a minute to fix and then off to shoot. And yes, it looks much like a small k22. The problem I had fitting a j frame grip before was I was trying a round butt grip. I'm learning. Yes H Richard, my .22/32 looks much like yours. A bit different end on the ejector rod and the grip angle looks different too. Yours looks really cool and has the same nice porportions. Elegent. I'll try to ffigure how to post some pics. Thanks so much for all your help and interest. I hope to get an L frame .357 this summer. Hopefully a new 586 with the 4 inch barrel. Cheers!
