22Lr and other ammo shortages

Yesterday at the Greensboro Gun Show, a box of 50 .22LR was around $4-$5/box depending on brand. Federal bulk box of 550 was $40-$50. s
Sure glad I bought a few weeks ago...could easily double my money. Trouble with me is I'm so old, I can remember when a box of 50 .22LR was 50 cents, not $5!

.22 ammo

And I remember it for .39 a box and we bought it at Monkey_wards, Sears and the local hardware store.. and NEVER had a FTF. I think shorts were not much more than a quarter. I wish I had bought more .22's., but I was having a hard time swallowing 23.95 for 550 rounds (bucket-o-bullets)... When the price tripled the last time this happened... The three year ago price of $7.99 was alot better,, I cant' believe it cost the manufacture three times that now... someone is making alot more $$.

Be careful of the ammo you buy

While in Fort Myers last week looking for 22LR ammo I came across 10 boxes of Remington Thunderbolt. No doubt many of you are familiar with this junk, but I was not. Bought all 10 boxes. It is the most fouling, nasty ammo I have ever seen. It was all I could do to get my brush down the barrel. I ended up pushing fouling pieces 1 1/4 inches long out the barrel. Stay away from this junk. If you are aware of other ammo this bad please let me know. I don't want to experience that problem ever again.

The local Wally got 10 cases of assorted .22's this morning. It was gone by 8:30 am. My "garage sale guy" (retired) got some he was willing to part with but I don't need any for 4 or 5 years. Also got a Colt 6920 which his partner bought for $1200 and was willing to "give" it to me for an extra few $hundred. Nah. Orlando show on Sat, don't want to shoot that bullet in my pocket just yet. Joe

If I might paraphrase the poster in my lgs that says we can thank the greatest gun and ammunition salesman since the invention of the modern day firearm for the ammo shelves and gun cases being bare. His initials are bho small letters intended.

The undertone here is that this shortage is caused or fueled by the G, which makes me think of something funny I read on a newspaper comment section. Somebody said it was time to bury guns, and the next guy said "If it's time to bury them, then it's time to dig them up." : )

Amen.

I wish the online sellers would find a way to say OUT OF STOCK on the serach results so I don't have to drill into their website only to learn I wasted my time.

I took the plunge a couple of times on GB and paid insane prices to have a couple of bricks. I hope the AHs that ran out and cleaned shelves to gouge the rest of us burn in hell, and I hope whoever says they're just capitalists and it's a fair matter of supply and demand blah blah burns too.

In my area this is the worst ammo shortage I've ever seen in my lifetime. I've been a very active shooter since 1979. There has never been a time when I could not find the calibers I normally use in shootable quantities available for purchase. During the last panic, I could just about always find .22 LR at Wal-Mart as well as .40, .45 ACP and especially .38 Special. At the time I was not shooting 9mm. Nowadays there's practically nothing available.

I have talked with church members who remember the lack of ammunition during WWII. But one could still buy .22 LR ammunition.

Walmart Cop

Last night I was at Walmart and decided to check out the ammo for 9mm. Just as I walked up a clerk came out with a box with a bunch of bows of Federal 9mm to put out. Two guys came over and one said he was a LEO and said he needed all of it so his officers could quailfy at the range. He told them they were out of ammo and they should sell him all of it since he was LEO.

I told the manager that is was wrong and that they should share some of the ammo with us. Then I got to thinking these guys had to be scamming the clerk. Well the cleck sold them all the 9mm and the only box of 357 plus all the 40.

I am sure that these guys are reselling this stuff. I never saw any ID indicating that they were really LEO.

I went to the front desk and told the manager and said why would the cops be buying ammo at Walmart? I hope they check this out because this has gotten out of hand. I mean its bad.

Yes I have my stock pile but if I shoot at the range two more times I will be out of 9mm and 38 spl.

Has anyone run into the scam in other areas?

no,but is sounds about right. right now people will do almost anything to get what they want, whether to shoot or sell. the clerk was the usual wallyworld dumbo. should have made them produce their badges or i.d. and if they weren't, police should have been called and the two charged with impersonating an officer.

Everything is still pretty scarce around here. A friend of mine is off work right now after having some surgery a few weeks ago. A few times he has gone to some stores when they had some ammo. He has bought his allowable amount, and he would take some other boxes and hide them in the store behind some other items that aren't popular. He then comes back later or the next day for his 2 or 3 box limit where he hid it. I wonder if he is not pulling my leg, because we always joke around, but I think he is serious. These are some desperate times for some.

We are experiencing the same here in Dayton OH
The local Wally stocks on Saturday night and starts to sell 7:00 am Sunday. I will be there in the morning I am interested in the theater of this. I hope to get some 9mm,I would like to go to the range and shoot my new DW Guardian !

Today at the gunshow was really interesting. Sure were a bunch of "non-gun" people trying to buy. Some seemed really put out that I didn't accept plastic. Hint: Cash is king. Any one with adequate cash could buy all the 22 caliber ammo they wanted at 9:00 AM. You just had to be willing to pay. Its a sellers market. There seemed to be no shortage of 9mm, just a shortage of willing buyers. Saw a bunch of 12 ga ammo. Even some rifle ammo. But if you were interested you had to pay up. If you hesitated, the next guy along would purchase his fill. One guy seemed confident He could come back later to buy all he wanted. An hour later he seemed disappointed. Its kind of fun and very rewarding to sell into a sellers market.

SGammo.com sold 180 5000rd cases of CCI 22LR in 30 minutes!! Thats almost a million 22LR rounds gone in half an hour. They where selling them for $32/500 they used to be $19/500.

A few months back sgammo offered 5,000rds of cci blazer ammo in 22lr for $250 shipped. Now its $39.95 a box of 50rds at ammotogo...

My LGS is out of all handgun ammo and some rifle ammo too. He said its all on order but when it arrives who knows.

Why 22lr ammo?? The 22lr ammo will put meat on the table up to deer sized game if the recession gets worse. Thats the only reason i stocked up on it. Why waste the bigger bore ammo.

Let me guess:
You didn't pay attention in 1994.
You didn't pay attention in 2008.
You didn't pay attention in November 2012.

You got caught unprepared in December 2012.

And now it's someone else's fault.

Just got home a bit ago from LGS in town who mainly caters to only LEOS and Millitary both active or retired, and they had tons of ammo in stock with the exception of .22LR and .22Mag. The only other shelf that was not packed was the .38 Spec. and .357 mag. Lots of .223, 308, 30-06, 9mm, .40, 45 .380 etc. They had both Federal and Gold Dot in handgun carts, and Federal and PMC in rifle carts. Lots of Pulmags and other brands as well. About 8 or 9 S&W AR's on the wall and about the same of AR-15/22's w/threaded barrel and 25 round mag for $419. Not too much left in the handguns, but they said they expect a shipment in this week yet. They sell Beretta, Glock and S&W, and good old leather Safariland holsters, mag carriers, etc. This store is located in Montgomery, Alabama Gulf Coast Distributors is the name.

Although I had a decent supply I helped a family member in need out. Times are tight and his business was struggling....so I offered him $200 for 1000 rounds of .22lr. It will allow me to shoot more and help him pay his rent. Win win. :)

17 hmr

There's been so much 17 hmr I've almost considered buying a gun to be able to shoot all the stuff that IS on the shelves. Sad....

The only ammo around me is 17hmr, 45 acp and 30-06. Everything else has been empty since re-election

One of the LGS I visit in my rounds and my FFL I use most seems to be able to get .380 auto. My wife hoots .380'so I have been buying from him as she needs it. He has some odd calibers that most people don't need like .41mag, 17hmr, .762 x 54, .44mag, ...But other than the .38 spl and .380 auto he has zero 9mm, .22LR, or .45ACP in target loads. Most stores have even run out of .40 cal ammo and semi auto's... they hung in the longest.

I was at the LGS today and they had SO MUCH .40 s&w it was crazy!! I snagged the last box of .357mag and a few boxes of 5.56 for good measure. With as bare as the store was I fear they will not be there long. :/

Walmart and Ammo Shortage

I was speaking with a manager of our local Walmart the other day regarding the ammo shortage. He told me that they have received communication from the DHS not to stock certain types of ammo and to not even order it. So he said that he does not place orders for more ammo any longer and just takes what comes on the truck and it is usually sold out within 30 minutes. I do not know if he was telling the truth or just blowing smoke but It sure seems fishy to me.

online ammo scams

Has anyone else had the honor of getting 22 ammo bought and paid for then only 3 or so weeks , just about the time you should be getting it have the company say sorry there is a problem with your order . they only got me for 50 dollars or so but times that with a million people and that turns into a lot of money and if they return the money then what about the interest that it earned in that month. who gets it ? not me is there anyone out there that I can turn these companys into as they are selling ammo that they do not have in stock?? thank you for reading this and I hope you do not get suckered into what I did

Not saying their practices are correct but... have you checked out the interest rates lately? I don't think they are getting rich off of your 50 bucks.

There is no shortage in any ammo people, especially 22lr ammo like everyone thinks. Go on gun broker, there is over 2 million rounds for sale on there. The reason why you are not finding it in stores is due to the greed and opportunity for the ammo wholesalers and gun shops to just take all there shipment of top rounds like 9mm, 45, 38, 22lr, 7.62 , 223, etc and sell it on gun broker for 200-400 % profit margins, plain and simple. If all the dumb idiot people buying ammo and guns right now , would just stop for a couple months, ammo would go back to what it used to be 6 months ago or even lower since they would have a **** ton of extra ammo they are sitting on.

Ammo is like toilet paper...it never goes bad, and you'll always end up using it!
