Howdy all.
Forum newb here.
I seem to have got the S&W collector's virus lately.
I'm trying to figure out the correct name for a K frame .22 I am looking at buying.
I've researched here at length and cannot find the answer.
This k frame is a 5 screw with a 6" tapered barrel and patridge front sight, adj rear.
Single line address.
Says only Smith and Wesson on the barrel.
No model number inside the crane on the frame.
The butt serial # is k 14xxx with the gap between the k and the numbers.
It does not seem to be a K22, Mod 17, Outdoorsman or Masterpiece based on the serial number.
Someone put some Pachmayer grips on it. : (
No box or papers so no clues.
What is it?
Thanx!

Welcome to the forum. What you are looking at is indeed an early K-22, and based on the serial number it probably shipped in 1947. The K-22 became the Model 17 when S&W began assigning model numbers around 1957. These early K-22's are very popular, and the value generally depends on the condition of the gun, whether the numbers all match (serial number on the butt, barrel flat, cylinder, and grips), and whether it includes the original box and papers. Since the original grips are missing and it does not include the box and papers, a good bit of the collector value would be diminished. However, depending on the condition and price, it would still be a very desirable shooter.

It is an early post-war K-22 Masterpiece. That is a sought-after gun, manufactured shortly after production resumed after WWII, and with a single-line address. Too bad somebody replaced the original grips with Pachmayrs (surely not for recoil reduction) and didn't keep them with the gun. Still a desirable gun, though, and a nice set of high-horn magna grips should be obtainable, especially from somebody on the forum. Good luck, it should be a good shooter (never met a K-22 that didn't shoot superbly).

Fungun,
Welcome to the Forum and the K22 addicts anonymous .
You basicly described an early post war K22 .
Those one line "Made in USA" versions are becoming desirable but
Condition and originality are everything in collectable guns,
In lower condition they become "Shooter" grade guns and pretty much are all equals.
Good luck and welcome aboard.

Does it look a little like this one?

Thank you for all the comments and being nice to a newb! : ))
The Pachmayers are gone, these are Altamont Classic Panel grips....good enough until I find some better more original type ones.
The grips took quite a bit of fitting...no fault of Altamont's as the grips fit perfect on a mid-70s Model 19 I have.
This gun has very little use...someone took off the sideplate years ago and did not assemble the DA sear correctly so the gun was put in a drawer for maybe 20 or 30 years.
Easy fix....no signs of damage by fumbling fingers. : ))
