Just wondering how much a 4" M&P .22LR that would later become the model 45 is worth. There is a little surface rust along with some wear. All serial numbers match (C407XXX). There is a blue box with the gun, but not sure if it is the box the gun come wait all those years ago.

Thank you.

Your revolver was shipped in 1955 to 1957 timeframe, so I think the box color was correct for that era. Does the box have an end label? The label should state model, barrel length and serial number.

Value is directly related to condition, so the percentage of original finish remaining is important. Also, any non-standard features can affect price. Pictures would be a great help, since the range in value for these guns is from $200 to over $1000.

Without photos, the words "rust" and "some wear" automatically push this to the bottom end of the price spectrum for me. Maybe photos would undercut the mental image I have, but maybe not.

If the box is original, the fact that you have a rare gun in its box probably starts the valuation at around $400 even in poor condition; the price would slowly climb from there as the determined condition improves. Maybe there is a collector out there who would go over $1000 for one of these in semi-rough condition, but I don't know. Most collectors will look for high condition guns, and those would be the ones that trade hands in the $2000-3000 range. Shooter grade revolvers would be stuck below a thousand in my guess (and "guess" is definitely the word).

So without photos, and leaving some room for grading, I would estimate from $400-800 for the gun I see in my mind based on your description.

Thank you all for your advice. The blue box has a stick on the side that says .22 on it so I am guessing it isn't the original box. The gun is now going for over $1000 so I think I am going to pass since while the pictures don't look bad at all, I don't think it is worth it to me to spend that much money on this gun. Plus the reserve hasn't been met yet.

To me it's rare to see a 45 or pre-45 in shooter condition. Most of the ones I see are 95% or better, often with box and papers, because they have been in the hands of collectors over the years. I've seen those go for anywhere from $1600 to $3000. I think David pretty well has it pegged at $400-800 for a shooter grade, depending on specifics and accessories. I'm retired from the post office and would love to find a shooter grade "post office" gun, which is why I follow this model.

Box "Is" Correct!!

QUOTE; "The blue box has a stick on the side that says .22 on it so I am guessing it isn't the original box."

442js,

The Box included with this Revolver is "Correctly" marked!! These Revolvers were never catalogued so a "Model Specific Box" was never produced!! Most all Early Pre-Model's, as is the case with this Revolver, came in this Std. 38 Military & Police Box with a "22" Label cemented over the "38" on the Box unless it was shipped much later than it was produced!! The exception to this is the fact that some of these Revolvers sat in inventory for many years after they were produced so it's also possible to see a Pre-Model 45 in a Later Box from time to time!! Not the general rule, but there are some out there!! Generally the later issued Model-Marked 45's were shipped in Std. Boxes with the Revolver's Information on the Paper End Labels affixed to the the Box Ends as with most other S&W Revolvers!!

That scratching and chrome job was done to cover up all the pitting and gouges.

Awesome picture of an extraordinary NON-SHOOTER. It's about time you posted them pictures.
Thanx for doing it.

Masterpiece,

I don't have much of a good idea as to how to grade it other than to say I've heard that such a Model 45 existed, now I know it does.

Can you give us any more details about it and what does it say on the end of the box? If you have a letter from Roy Jinks, what does it say?

Congratulations on being the owner of such a rare nickel & engraved Model 45.

Tom
