I've decided to begin the search for a gently used 22LR revolver preferably with a 4" barrel. I'm familiar with the model 617 but was wondering what other model numbers might be out there for me to search for? Can someone tell me any model numbers that came in this configuration?

Yes, the older model 18 are very nice. But to find a really nice one it is going to cost about $700 if you can find one. So after a long search I just ordered a new classic model 18 for $815 out the door. It comes with S&W lifetime warrenty.

:)
A couple more to think about:
-S&W model 63 (stainless, 4 inch, 6 round). I own one and it is a fine shooter. The new model 63 is either a 3 or 5 inch. I have no experience. Prices around $500 to $750.
-S&W model 34 (blue, 6 round 4 inch/2 inch). Prices seem a little lower: $450 to $600.
Good luck in your search,
Cockerpoodle

None of the S&W 22 revolvers are cheap these days but if you want the classic look a Model 18 is the way to go in my opinion for a 4 inch barrel. New or used is up to you but there's just something about a Pinned and Recessed 18 that is special.

One more option, but it will be hard to find is the 4" 17-6. Has the full lug barrel like the 617 or 686. I just bought one and have only fired it once (after today it will be twice) and I really like it. Great companion piece if you have a 586 or 686.

Smith also made the model 48 (.22 WMR) in a 4" like the model 18, sometimes you will see them with the LR cylinder included.

I have two m63 no-dash 4" that are lightweight and easy to shoot.
These are on a j frame, while m18 is a k frame, and somewhat larger and heavier.

This one is pinned and recessed...

Thanks for all of this info. I'm looking for a nice .22 revolver as well.

Can you all tell me why a pinned barrel might be more desireable?

I completely understand why a recessed cylinder is important but don't know enough about the barrel assembly options.

fyimo,

Tell us about the grips on your two M18s. Are those smooth factory or from another source? Obviously they look perfect to my eye.

One set is a set of S&W target grips that I bought from VM a forum member and he had sanded the checkering off and gave them sort of a plan swell shape. I bought them because this is my sweeties revolver and S&W target grips were are to big for her hands. The coco bolo set is a set of custom grips by Kurac also a forum member and they are similar in shape to S&W coke grips without checkering and this is the Model 18 I shoot.
