It was a slow day at work not long ago and I decided to take a few minutes at lunch to do some trolling at my favorite local gun store. I walk in and my favorite salesman, Yog, greets me saying, "I have something in the back you might want to see, it's a S&W M-27, 8-3/8", blued in the presentation case!" I replied, thanks Yog, but, I already have a nickel one. As the look of disappointment filled his sad brown eyes, I wandered over to the used handgun case.

I looked down to see a 4" N-frame. A closer look at the tag indicated it was a 25-2, 45 ACP. So, I said, "Yog, I would like to look at this one", pointing to the altered revolver. Happily, he pulled it from the case, opened the cylinder and handed it too me, saying, "It's pretty nice, but someone cut the barrel."

I went through my usual check out routine. I put it down on the counter. "This gun hasn't been shot very much." "The 'smith did some pretty nice work." ... "I've always wanted a 4" 25-2, but, I've never seen a factory 4" and could never bring myself to have my 6-1/2"barrel cut." Yog, the eternal optimist, chimes in, "Now, you don't have to!" I reply, "$495, huh? Let's do the paperwork."

This revolver is one of the best buys I have made in a looong time. There was quite a bit of custom work done, including:

1. It looks like the original front sight / ramp was cut from the original barrel and milled, then set in a dovetail that was milled into the rib of the shortened barrel. See pic of the muzzle.
2, The muzzle crown is done nicely.
3. The grip frame was round butted.
4. The trigger pull is extremely nice. One of the best pulls I have on my revolvers. This always worries me, as I have experienced "custom" trigger jobs where the so called "smith" simply filed down the mainspring strain screw...too much! Requiring shims to correct light strikes! Not this one. The smith who did this work actually did a real trigger job and apparently even narrowed the mainspring at the top to lighten the weight of pull.

Eventually I will replace the rubber Houge's with wood stocks. I'll probably get a set of Hogue cocobolo finger groove stocks, since the locator pin was removed and the "monogrip" hanger is currently installed.

I made a CCW holster for this revolver. It is a high ride design since the bulk of the cylinder (and the center of mass of the revolver) is above the top of the belt. The trigger guard is covered in a "pocket" that is stitched, providing some extra stability for this top-heavy arrangement. To shorten the draw stroke, I included a cut out at the front of the cylinder. This allows the muzzle to clear leather just at belt height. The wide wings, or flanges, distribute the weight well. I don't normally name my holster designs, but I think I'll call this pattern "N-Service".

Here's some pics. Enjoy.

Great looking gun & deal! I like a 45ACP revolver. I have a 625 JM. It was not my 1st choice, but am glad to own and shoot it. Bob

If the "hanger" required the removal of the cross-pin at the bottom of the grip frame, you have some older Hogue's, probably dating from the 70's. You will not be able to use that hanger with new Hogue grips as the new hangers utilize that cross-pin. You will need to replace the cross-pin before installing any new (and by that I mean any Hogue grip made within the last 25 years or more) Hogue grips.

Very nice find and I concur that the workmanship appears to be top-notch. Hope that it shoots as well as it looks.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

That is one nice piece of custom work. I'm impressed with the front sight work. It seems most folks don't go to the trouble of keeping the original sight anymore, using a replacement. I'm also impressed with the holster work, great design and looks like quality workmanship. Well done!

I carried a S&W Mod 25 as a duty gun for several years. I used a 6.5, and later a 6 inch barrel.
Like muzzle blast I just could not cut the barrel down on a factory gun.

What You have IMHO, is the FINEST Combat Revolver on the PLANET, a 4 inch S&W N frame in 45 ACP/45 Auto Rim.

YOU made a great find, and a great buy.

Beautiful revolver...still looks huge there on your waist though, so not sure how well it will work for you as a CCW. :-)

All, thanks for the replies.

NE450No.2

I agree. This one is going to get used.

LCPfraTN:

It's not huge, it's only an N-frame. My wife took the picture. I asked her to get a proper camera angle focusing on the holster, so the photo would not make my hips look too big. (Made sure the 25-2 was unloaded first!)

SLT223:

"Is that a 577 Nitro Express round?"

Good eye! Actually, it is a 600 Nitro Express. Pic below shows comparison versus a .45 ACP, 22-250, 30-06, 416 Rigby and a 458 Winchester Mag.

That is a very nice model 25. I have been looking for one for awhile now. I want to finder a shooter grade one and have a smith do the same mod to it. Most of the ones I have found so far cost more than I want to spend on a base project gun.

Cold weather is upon us and cold weather means larger coats. That equates, to me at least, to being able to carry larger revolvers concealed. I am looking forward to carrying my LH .44 special under a winter coat. When KB makes my custom RB grips I'll really be in business.

That .45 is a thing of beauty!

That's a very, very nice one . . . and with a beautiful profile. I always felt, back "in the day," that S&W really blew it by not offering shorter barrel versions of the 25-2.

Mine's been shortened to 3 1/4" and is a WONDERFUL revolver. As a matter of fact, its my most favorite handgun of any type and I carry it daily. Here's mine. It sports a set of Elk stags from Patrick Grashorn w/ a Tyler T-grip.

Again, congratulations on snagging a wonderful and unique revolver!

Do you have a 600 Nitro Express rifle???

If so tell us about it...

I will also add that IF I had ever seen a 4" 25-2 modified like yours I would have bought it...

I can also say that I keep a S&W 325 NG [45 ACP/Auto Rim], under my pillow every night.

Very nice score.

Can I get Yog's phone number?
