I recently picked up a minty 25-2 with presentation case and all accessories and paper work . Serial N40XXXX.....I'd be hard pressed to tell if the previous owner actually ever fired it.
But my question is this, it has a red ramp front sight, I thought these came with partridge front sights? Did these ever leave the factory with red ramp front sights? If not , whoever replaced the sight blade did an excellent job, looks factory to me.

I've already put 500 rounds through her, mixed hardball and plated....I'm just starting to work up loads with lead, trying to find the best combination for the .455-56" throats this has.

Mine came with patridge. Don't know about the others.

I am curious about one thing though. How was the accuracy with the hardball? I still haven't had the chance to shoot mine. And I plan on using commercial hard ball.

Without a letter, it will be impossible to tell if your 25-2 left the factory that way.

When I was shooting steel silhouette field pistol I did the reverse of what you have, and sent a 29-2 barrel in to have the 8-3/8 inch barrel's red ramp sight changed to Patridge, and it looks factory all the way because it is factory.

This could easily be the case for your revolver. A letter will tell you, if it's important.

While I am not aware of such a combination being offered as "factory" the Model 25-2 was made in an era of "the customer is king" so...

And with S&W, the saying is, "Never say never!"

I was shooting offhand at 25 yards, I was shooting winchester white box and was getting about 3" the plated Rainier 250 grainers shot better at around 1 3/4 - 2"..... pretty sure I can bring that down some shooting off a rest

I had one with red ramp. They aren't common, but they do exist.

I have seen a handful of the 45 colt chambered guns both ways too. Factory or not on mine, I prefer the ramp, but I do like the partridge with gold bead on my 625JM

I have had 25-5's with both red ramp and green ramp front sights.

25-5 are about the same way only in reverse. Biggest part I've come across are red ramp. If Guns were produced with pin in front sights they can end up with either.

M25-2 came with either 6 or 6 1/2" barrel lengths and came standard with patridge front sights.
I'll have to go to the safe and see if my 25-2 has escaped. I wanted to shoot qualification with it which required drawing from a holster. Back in those long gone days, officers could bring our guns to the Springfield Service Center.
I imagined it would require machining to accomplish since I couldn't see any sign of a front sight pin. I was surprised when the gun was quickly returned to me with the new ramp sight. The rounded end of the mounting pin is now very slightly proud of the sight base. Also returned, was the patridge front sight and sheared pin in the plastic bag that they always returned customer's parts in. The gunsmith explained that it was quickest just to shear the pin.

Patridge, named for E.E. Patridge who designed it, not partridge.

I have never seen a 25-2 with a ramp. But others say they had one or it was available. I had a 25-2 and it was the most accurate S&W I ever owned bar none. See target. Twelve rounds at 25 yards. But I hate the moon clips. Never could work them. After several years of frustration I sold the gun.
