hey guys not much of a s&w guy so came to the pros, what do I have. its marked 25-2 1955 I know its a 44ar / 45acp and I think its had zinc phosphating (parkerized) done to it. ser#n378*** . I bought this at a sale they had two firearms in one case and sold them that way I wanted the colt that was with this. any help with what this is for sure and what its worth to resale would be much appreciated. thanks o2stk1

Your 25-2 looks like it has been refinished with some type of hard chrome or something similar. The S&W logo has been polished off the side plate and the rear sight has been replaced as have the stocks. The serial number dates it to late 1976. It should be a good revolver to shoot.

I would think the value would be at least $500 as a pure shooter.What Colt did you get? We like those too :)

In case you try to shoot it, those are the wrong stocks. Probably K-frame but what ever, they don't fit properly. If you were to shoot some 230g +P 45 ACPs through it that exposed sharp shoulder, where the back strap meets the frame, could get un-comfortable.

With the poor refinish, Millet sight and wrong grips, I'm afraid there is no collectability.
However, these guns are outstanding shooters. Just as a shooter, I wouldn't give more than $400-450 for it.
BTW: congratulations on the Diamondback. Great find there.

thanks for the help guys, don't have much in it and just didn't want to mess someone over on it. the diamond back was what I was after this was just thrown in with it. I have been offered 450 for it so I guess he was right on it.

Hate to say it but I do believe the winner of those two revolvers is the Colt. If it has not been refinished you did very well. Do not sell that Diamondback - go to a Colt forum or even GB and see what they are bringing! You will be surprised.
sorry about that the 450 was for the smith, I would buy diamondbacks all day if I could get em for that price only bad thing about the 22 no box but can live with that it didn't even have a turn ring
If the 25-2 (which is 45 ACP used with moon clips) and the most prominent revolver used by revolver competitors, times and locks up properly it is worth more than any $450. It has an industrial hard chrome finish applied, which wears like iron and doesn't show wear much at all. This is a SHOOTER of the first quality and after you shoot it much you will let your Colts get dusty. But replace those grips first with good fitting N Frame grips. Hogue makes good ones as well as many others. S&W Target grips with the proper speed loader cut out should run around $50 to $75 depending on condition.
You might offer it on this forum first. Some folks will be really interested in it. If I had the cash, I would be.

$500? $450? I am shocked. A nice one is $700. Is there really so little difference between a nice one and refinished one with incorrect stocks and replacement parts?
As a working gun/shooter, I would say it is easily worth $450-500 as long as it shoots well. It is likely several times more functional than a factory revolver. The only concern I would have is throat diameter issues common to the breed.
I have found most S&W factory stocks are heinous on a shooter, so the first thing to do is remove and replace them with something useful, putting them someplace safe in case of future sale. (Learned the hard way - I am pretty sure I tossed the factory stocks from my M58, which I would happily sell to a fetishist, but they were useless; miserable to the point of cruelty.)

Only in the minds of those who hope he will sell it to them for that price. Sadly we see a lot of this on the forum. Locally I haven't seen any N-frame in any condition for less than $500 (and I bought that one) in years.
