I have been offered a chance to buy a 25-2 ….but have been unable to see the gun. I am looking specifically for a .45 Colt. Were all 25-2's .45 ACP? If this is a .45 ACP I will call this guy off. Thanks for any information on this!

To the best of my knowledge, all the -2 guns were ACP. Some pre-model marked guns were shipped in .45 Colt and they are worth a mint. The 25-3 and 25-5 guns were .45 Colt FWIW.

O K. Thanks guys! It looks like I'll just have to see this one... but what can be bad about getting a Smith in your hands? especially an older one. And this one is supposedly in A-1 condition. It seems that I did read something about some of these being mis-stamped or something.

Just know that the likelihood of it being a .45 colt is pretty low. I've never seen one. I know they exist, but haven't run across one. I do have a couple (blue and nickel) of .45 Colt 4" 25-5's though....those are much, much easier to find.

There was a batch of some Model 1955 examples that were incorrectly roll marked Model 1950. They are two different critters if you look at correct examples of both. The true Model 1950 has a thinner profile barrel and the true 1955 being the heavier profile.

Yes, they are desirable to collectors if found. (Maybe to those like me at least) There are a few posts describing the "anomaly" regarding the mismarking in the links I've provided.

I'm pretty sure that Smith never cataloged a 25-2 in .45 Colt. All I have ever seen or heard of have been in .45 ACP. The .45 Colt guns are 25-5. And the 25-3 commemorative version. Now that is not to say that Smith may not have made some 25-2s in .45 Colt, but if they did, it was darn few!

I believe the model of 1955 that became the M25-2... as mine is... is 45ACP (accepts 45 AR). It has a short cylinder. It's been reported that some were fitted with interchangeable 45 Colt cylinders... possibly by the factory or others. However 45 Colt loads had to be kept short to prevent protruding from the cylinder mouth. A longer cylinder could be fitted by recutting the barrel but then the gap would be excessive for the short ACP cylinder.

I expect you'll be better off looking for a later dash number which is chambered for the Colt round if that's what you want.
