I'm going to look at 25-5 for possible addition to my collection later today.
The seller tells me that is father bought the gun new and rarely fired it (no box or paperwork or half moons).

He described the gun as having a "matt finish" and diamond grips.

The the "matt finish" is a bit of a curve ball, I can't find that this model was ever shipped in other than blue or nickle.

Was 25-5 ever produced in this configuration?

Thanks.

A 25-5 should be a 45Colt in S&W deep blue and was produced way after the Diamond Grips. During production the barrel pin was dropped around 1980 I think. Sounds like this is a parts gun that has been refinished and fitted with a 45acp cylinder from a 25-2.

UPDATE!
Just got off the phone.
The gun is a 25-2 (model of 1955) . No diamond grips.
serial # 283xx.

The question remains did this gun ship with a matt finish?

A 25-2 with an original factory finish other than bright blue would be very rare. However, it is common for sellers who are not interested in guns to describe them with words that collectors would not use. I vote go take a look.

The serial number isn't correct for a 25-2; should be six digits preceded by an S (before 1969) or an N after 1969. Given the errors in describing this gun I wouldn't worry too much about the matte finish description until I had a chance to look at it. Good luck, pictures would be nice.
