27-1 just acquired

Got a call from the owner of my favorite LGS informing me he just received a consignment S&W I would really like.

Turned out to be a 27-1 6 1/2" barrel, red ramp front, white outline rear sight, .500 TT, .500 TH, 4 screw, walnut magna stocks with diamonds numbered to the frame. Serial number
S2204xx No box or docs.


There is evidence of bluing loss on both sides of the barrel at the muzzle. Very slight, but noticeable turn line on the cylinder.

Very light freckling below the cylinder release latch.
Serial number indicates it's DOS in early 1961. The one thing I'm a bit confused about is, according to the 4th. edition, if I'm reading it correctly, .500 TT were offered from 1975 to 1980 yet this shipped in 1961. Bought it for $700, not too bad but I figured how often does one stumble across a -1 nice condition.

I think the '75 date is when it became standard. Target.triggers & hammers were available in the mid 50's. I too have a 27-1, it letters as being shipped with both target hammer & trigger and grips, 5" barrel. Serial no. S 220404

That's a nice one. My itch is the 27-2 and I have all the barrel lengths except the 6 1/2". Good buy.

Beautiful gun overall, for its age. If that were a much more common N prefix -2 in that exact condition I would call it a $ 900 gun. Being an S prefix - 1 , that gun, in that condition, in my opinion...$ 1,250 , at least that's what I would expect to pay, and would pay without hesitation. At $ 700 you did fantastic.

That 27-1 looks like a great gun, but that Honda has a bit of "muzzle wear" that I don't think will buff out with some Flitz and an old T-shirt... And its "turn line" looks to have been a bit too sharp, resulting in a premature lock up with a stray light post...


In all seriousness, that is an Exceptional buy on a 27-1. Congrats!!!

Just to show how S&W didn't make or ship anything in order, the gun above S220404, was shipped 10-24-62. Another 27-1 serial # S218968 shipped 3-19-63. And, 27(no dash) serial # S220562 shipped 1-30-62.

The model 27 normally shipped with standard hammer and trigger, Magna stocks and black front sight and black rear sight until 1975 when they were upgraded to the full target and wood presentation box. Six inch barrel and longer were normally shipped with Patridge front sight.

From the proud front sight pin, I would think your gun was a special order, or returned for the changes.

Great looking gun and great find!!! Would love to have it. And it has been shot enough that there is no harm in continuing to shoot it!!

I haven't been around guns for a long time but I'm pretty sure this is the first 27-1 I've seen.

I have a 6 1/2" 1959 M27.

Looks like I'm going to have to get a letter on this one based upon the feedback I'm receiving about the serial number re: DOS. Since S220xxx started in 1961 and this revolver is S2204xx I just made the fatal mistake of assuming it shipped in the early part of 1961. Just goes to show you can't assume anything regarding S&W.

I took off the grips again this morning just to double check that there were no markings indicating a return to the factory for any reason and the only numbers stamped is an assembly number which matches the assembly number stamped into the yoke. It looks like NIGHTOWL is correct that this one will letter as a special order.

I was always under the impression that bughman front sights are uncommon on these, most have patridge?

Having read a number of posts here on the forum, it appears that the 6" guns usually have a Patridge front sight and the 6 1/2" guns have the Baughman front sight.
