Hello to all, Found a 27-2 5" Blue (Luck?!)

Serial # N108xx puts it in the 1970-1972 range.

Can anyone better guess/provide the manufacture date?

Excellent spankin condition in presentation box.

What you see is what I'll get.

Any idea of its value range?

Thank you, Dave

It's a 5".
Yes. The best barrel length in my opinion. Here's mine:

Paid $450 for it in 2015 and it came with its original box!

Updated

Corrected typo on the barrel length @ 5 inch.

Grips are Target Stocks which seems to have been the S&W revised option later in production?

Awaiting confirmation grips are #'d to the gun.

Any idea of a better manufacture date?

Value is spot on/agreed murphydog. CA is a difficult place for "Fun with Guns..."

Thank you, Dave

Very nice find. You're as close as you can get on the manufacture date, you can get a ship date from SWHF, which is what S&W considers the "birthday". Cost you another $100, and it also gives the configuration of the gun when shipped, which would verify the stocks, but those are period correct.

I would have valued it higher considering it has the presentation case, tools and paperwork with it. I was going to say $1500 maybe more

I recently paid over $1,800 out the door from Amoskeag Auction for this late Model 27-2 with a 5" barrel. My bid was within the estimated range from the auction house.

Ok, some observations. You have a full target configuration 27-2 and they did not normally ship that way until after September 1975. You also have a red ramp when the standard was plain ramp and plain rear sight. The box is correct for a 5 inch barrel. Boxes for the 5 inch are not often seen without the gun.

From your serial number, I would surmise that it shipped with a standard configuration in a blue cardboard box, with Magna stocks, plain front sight, and standard trigger and hammer. Some proud owner then upgraded to what you have now. Now, you are the proud owner of a very fine revolver.

Now I could be wrong! It could have been shipped 3 years later than the serial would indicate. A letter of authenticity is needed to see how it actually shipped. Either way, you have a very fine firearm that you can shoot forever!!

Ah...

With thanks for the replies. This has not been purchased but i was looking to the forum for additional info on this piece.

...especially Nightowl's specifics.

Target configuration yes. Ship date concerning. No interest or want a re-configuered shooter with a presentation box.

I would rather have this gun! Proud owner...meh...

Will not buy this and then spend mo mony to "see" what it really is. Lucky for me my bench is deep and i want what i want.

Again thanks to all great info to consider! Best, Dave

Very nice gun
You have written that the serial number has 5 digit and not 6, so your 27-2 5" was produced in the first year of the N suffix, if i remember well 1972, but i'm writing out of my home and i haven't with me the Standard Catalog to check the rigth year.

There are all sorts of possibilities regarding its age and originality...

Richard's scenario is most likely. In theory someone could have ordered it in the early 1970s with TH/TS/TT, but obviously not with the case. Also, the closeup of the red sight insert suggests to me it is not a factory job, as these were usually wider at the base than at the top of the blade.

So if you want to be certain of a factory complete package without a letter, this is not the one.

UPDATE DEC 16

Well, the seller read the serial # incorrectly. We now have the correct info and thought to share.

Serial # N410xxx

Most probably 1977

Correct 3 T's and Presentation Box. All Original.

From the Widow of the Original owner here in SoCal. Shot very, very, very little and spent it's life in the box.

I'm now after it!

Again thanks for all of the help! Best, Dave

The 27-2 I posted about above is serial #419xxx, shipped November 1977. 5" barrel with Target grips, sights, trigger & hammer. There isn't a red insert in the front sight.

Hope that helps
Chip

That is truly a nice looking 27-2 package. Awesome.

Thank you TinMan for your share.

The only ? on "my piece" is where did the Red Insert come from? We'll need a Ouija Board to get in touch with the OG owner to find out!

IMO back in the day; those were put in at gun shows on the spot or by a smith, etc.

Does anyone have info re Red Inserts - Factory 27s or otherwise?

Best, Dave

Auction

I recently paid over $1,800 out the door from Amoskeag Auction for this late Model 27-2 with a 5" barrel. My bid was within the estimated range from the auction house.

The last auction I went to was the price of the revolver, 10percent to the auction 9 percent tax, thirty dollars to the ffl wait 10 days and gasoline.

Now I own it!

1977 27-2 357 Magnum 5in Barrel-3Ts-P&R + Presentation Box-Docs-Tools-All Original

Purchased from the OGs Widow. Steven (RIP) purchased in 1977, shot a hundred or so rounds if that. Then it sat in the box for over 40 years.

Thank you to the forum and members for the assist.

Best, Dave
