Maybe an ex-service member purchased it there and brought it back?
Gun is in pretty nice shape except for a small pitted spot on the edge of one cylinder flute. Looks like it rusted there as it was laying on something.
Since its not a minty example I can happily shoot it without worry.
Yes Sir - that gun spent some time in Germany. You might find out a little more about it with a History letter. It would tell you the date the gun shipped from the factory, and where it shipped. Neat gun.
In the early '70s (likely before and after too) there were Rod & Gun Clubs on the major bases in Germany. A US service member could buy almost anything US or European made at those clubs and then have them shipped home as household goods. The German proofing was sometimes seen on US guns and sometimes not. I have a 27-2 and a Gold Gold Cup NM I bought in Stuttgart in 1974 with no German proofs but also had a M14 that did have them. Just depended from where the club sourced the guns I think.
