27-2 w/4" Barrel - Uncommon?

Well,Judging by all the photos posted I would have a hard time calling them "Rare".Compared to other barrel lengths yes,But overall no.

I acquired a nickel 4" that is P&R a few years ago , simply because I was tired of waiting for a nice 3 1/2 !

So I acquired a rarer one somewhat by happenstance ? Who knew ?

Regards ,
George - I did locate a nice 3 1/2 earlier this year

I think you are correct, the term rare is used a bit too freely.

I think scarce or uncommon would fit better ;)

There are few properly named "rare" guns made post war, so it seems.

Another funny observation is that something that is scarce may not be overly desirable. The are scarce because they didn't sell well and never took off.

An example I have is a 27-3, 8 3/8" nickle. Its a scarce item, the long barrel, nickle and -3 lacking P&R make it an unpopular item. When it was made long tubes were fading and nickle was passe. Thus the low numbers, but still valued on the lower side of M27s.

Back to the 4" they seem not as popular as the 3 1/2". There are a lot less of them floating around. Is it rare, I think not, is it uncommon probably. You find a lot more 3 1/2", 5" and 6" before you find a 4". I would however guess that you can go online and find one at will ;)

A couple years back I was telling a buddy of mine that the 4" was the rarest barrel length for 27-2's. He then bought two off of a local gun board in the next month and a half. Both nickel- one with "standard" configuration TT/TH RR/WO- one with standard sights and smooth combat trigger to go along with the TH. So I agree, rare is not the right term for 4" 27-2's. Least common is probably more accurate. The one he bought with standard sights and smooth combat trigger would possibly be considered a rare variant and to me would increase the value of the gun. Not necessarily because of the rarity but because I like plain sights and smooth triggers.

We are very lucky here in southern California that nice 4" 27-2s are pretty easy to find ! ;) ;)
Our offensive gun laws will not allow us to export them though ! :) :)
