Good morning all -

In my travels through the dark corners of the interwebs I've managed to come up with a 624 cylinder and a 4" barrel from a 24-3 so I'm looking at options for a donor frame.

My questions are specific to using a 28-2 frame: for those who have converted a 28-2 to a caliber that uses a non-recessed cylinder, how have you dealt with the frame lug? Do you leave it as-is and just have a bit more movement of the cylinder during extraction? Do you replace it with a non-recessed lug?

Or would starting with a 28-3 frame that is set up for a non-recessed cylinder be a better choice?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and advice....

For someone of your current skill level, changing the frame lug would be a simple matter. It's harder to come up with another frame or cylinder, easier to get a frame lug and swap it out. It's a round, headed pin that is staked in on the inside of the frame. You can knock it out with a pin punch and install a different one and stake it in, easily.

You may need to do this on an older gun when the frame lug becomes worn enough that the cylinder can come off backwards. The cylinder can ride up over the lug, then there is nothing else keeping it on when the cylinder is open.

Edit to add - Never mix 8 shot frames and cylinders with 6 shot frames and cylinders. The chamber hole pattern (bolt hole pattern) is .070 larger diameter on the 8 shot frame and cylinder. The chambers of an 8 shot cylinder won't line up with the barrel of a 6 shot frame. The chambers of a 6 shot cylinder won't line up with the barrel of an 8 shot frame.
