28-2 DOB?

Just picked up a Highway Patrolman Model 28-2 with an "N" prefix and five digit serial number; N85XXX. According to my SCSW Third Edition, the five digit N prefix would put the dob between 1969 - 1972 as all after had 6 digits. Checked with SW Customer Service and he said "1981." That would seem correct if it were a six digit SN, but it's FIVE. Can anyone shed any light on this?

nbr. is definately N with 5 following digits. According to my info, N from 1 to 100,000 is 1969-1972.

Weird. He sounded quite young. The second SW rep I talked to took a few minutes to actually look it up and then gave me the answer which agrees with the SCSW Third Edition.

When the 28 gets back from SW and refinishing, I might invest the $50.00 for one of Roy's letters. It's only 41 years old but would be interesting to see where it's been.
