I found a NIB 28-2 with tools and paperwork in original box at the LGS. It has a 6 inch barrel and orig wooden grips. It appears to be test fired only. What would be a fair price? I am looking for a 27 but a 28 may tide me over for a little while. Gun is marked 760.00 out the door. Is this too much for the gun in todays market? I do not run across to many in this condition.

Thanks for your comments

In my opinion it is a little too much in todays market it is worth what someone's willing to pay I do not think there going down in price anytime soon.

A year or two back that may have been a $500 gun.Are they really climbing that fast?

I paid $500 for this in November / December. 28-2, no box, no papers, no tools. EXCELLENT condition, virtually no wear, it must have been a safe queen.

Now, on GB, this type of deal is in the $750 range. Indeed I saw a similar gun with the wood stocks for $750 locally.

If the SN starts with S, and in the condition you say, I would go for it. JMO.

I just bought a beautiful 28-2 4" at our local show today for $575.00. He was as asking $650.00, but I made him an offer and he said yes:) Mine did not have the box or paper work.
There is a mint condition 27-2 at a local shop with the box no paper work and they asking $800.00 and will not budge, believe me I have tried.
My next purchase is going to be a 29-2 or 29-3 in the same condition if I can find one.

I just bought this today for bit under $500, and I feel pretty good about it:

28-2 with a bit of finish wear.

Just saw 4 different 27-2's at my LGS...all boxed, papered, and in great condition. They had various barrel lengths, and all were marked over $850.00. They lasted two days.

Thanks for all of the replies. I feel like the price is a little high. However in todays crazy market I know if I pass this one up, it will be hard to find another one in this condition.

I think for a 6 inch 28-2 that is too high even with all the goodies but only by about about $100 and if it was a 4 inch it would be at the top of the price range. I recently sold a 4 inch 28-2 4 inch with an S serial number with box and in mint shape for $725. The 6 inch usually sells for less and an N serial numbers sell for less then an S serial numbered 28-2's.

The way it works is you buy it and tomorrow you find the right one at half the cost.

I don't know if it's regional but I'm finding more This year than in a long long time.

Well yesterday I just picked this LNIB S serial number 1967 vintage 28-2 ( box, tool kit, nice target stocks ) for $750 so I would say they are in the ball park. You might be able to find one less but no one in the condition your describe per se you might end up looking for a while.

On the other side of the coin.

For a 6" N series 28-2 $760.00 is $150-$200 too much in my opinion.
I'm sure others will disagree, because it's easy to tell others to pay big bucks when it's not your money being spent and it's reassuring to
S&W owners to see high selling prices.

And here I was complaining about the $325 layout for this last year.....
Shoot - I recall the M28 being 'the poor man's .357'.

I don't think it's ever reassuring to see high prices on something I enjoy collecting. I got plenty to sell in this market but I won't do it. I will always be a buyer until my last. High prices just make it difficult to acquire my "needs".
