I just won a 28-2 on Gunbroker and realized it has a neat serial number. As I understand it, the GCA in 1968 is what made S&W change from “S” to “N” prefixes on their N frame revolvers. It also lead to the creation of those pesky 4473’s we all love filling out.

Well wouldn’t you know, this 28-2 is N4473. The irony is that it’ll be the first S&W I’ve ever bought using my C&R license, so no 4473 for this gun!

A very cool and serendipitous co-incidence.
I’m after a 6” myself. A S prefix sold yesterday on GB for $650.
I shoulda woulda coulda
I’ll get one soon as I already have a “California Assn of Highway Patrolmen” presentation case for it. I’ve only seen 6” cases.

Maybe I'm crazy but the Model 28 was introduced in 1954. It's not old enough to be purchased on a C&R license without a 4473. Someone tell me I'm wrong, PLEASE!!!

I thought the only CHP commemorative models were 19-4 and 68-2; both K frames.

Maybe not crazy, but maybe went to sleep a few times in math class?...1954 guns are now 70 years old......Ben

Have a S&W Model 28 that I purchased in the 60's and trying to find out the production date - SN 38633. Can anyone help? Thanks!

C&R are 50 years old and older. So anything previous to 1974 now qualifies.
:)

I’ve been eligible for C&R for over two decades. Now I just have to find a collector of broken down old white men… not likely to qualify as a “safe queen”. (For multiple reasons!)
