I pretty much have the coin for one-and I like the N frame. So for general all around shooting which do you prefer 357 or 44mag? I go to the range and also like to go out to the desert and plink-blow up stuff. What's your opinion as to the overall best caliber/gun? (I prefer the 6 or 6 1/2 inch barrel.) Thanks, Mark

I'd take the .357 28 everyday! .44 mag 29's have their purpose but beng able to shoot full power magnums and .22LR like .38 wadcutters out of the same revolver...

If you're buying off the shelf ammo the .357 is cheaper to feed. If you're a reloader I tend to think the .44 is the more fun thing to shoot and can be easily loaded from very mild to wild. Of course you can reload the .357 also.
Since I do reload I would want the .44 if I didn't have both.

Sir, the .44 is more versatile. The .357 is cheaper, both to buy and to feed, and also easier to shoot well. You pays your money and takes your choice.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

Buy the 28-2, because you can fire it much longer without a sore hand. And in case of emergency, the 28-2 will do the work as good as the 29-2 will. You will find 29's much more often than a well treated 28. So the 28 is the much better and a bit more "exotic" choice.

You can fire the 357 and the 38 Special with the same accuracy-level out of the 28-2. So you will find well priced fodder for this working-horse nearly everywhere. But you will be a lucky guy if you got a 44 Mag. that shoots the tamer 44 Special in a better than average circle.

Just my 2 cents

A 29-2 will always be worth more. Plus unlike some, I have had great luck with .44 special loads shooting well in several of my 29's. They are both nice guns, and I've owned both. I would take a 29-2 any day over a 28-2. The finish is nicer and they have the three T's.

Like the old saying goes, It's better to have too much and not need it, than to not have enough when you really do!

I have both and while I really like a 357 there is nothing like shooting a 44 magnum. I do most of my shooting using 44 special reloads and I can blow the bullseye out with a fun to shoot load.

There is no doubt the 29-2 is a much better looking gun then the 28-2. To me the high gloss blue beats the flat blue every time in looks. Now if you were comparing the 29-2 against a 27-2 in the same barrel length that would be a different story. The checkered top strap on the 27-2 makes it the sexiest S&W made in my book.

29-2 especially if you are a reloader. As someone wrote, "mild to wild." A 44 can be reloaded to 38 special specs or to high end, "oh my goodness that hurt my hand.'

What's wrong with a 27-2?

You know you want one of each!

You don't say what else you own and shoot. I think a good .357 Magnum is mandatory for any self respecting gun fancier. All the calibers are cool, all have thier place, but, you NEED a good .357 and the model 28 is, mechanically, as good as it will ever get. You can upgrade to a 27 if you wish, but, you are giving up nothing in performance with the Highway Patrolman.

If I couldn't buy both, my first choice would be the 44. Handloading makes this a one-gun, do it all. beaver.

Looks like the voteing is about 50/50. I have opinions but dont want to add to the confusion!
Just buy whatever shows up first and get the other later.

I have the 28-2 and I love it ! I have shot the 29-2 before and enjoyed it but the 28-2 is my pick !

Preface with the fact that I'm a reloader.

If I had only one pistol in the world, it would be a 4" .44mag.

I see the N frame .357 as an econo gun. 1/2 the powder and lead, with the same feel in the hand. Low cost alternative for practice.

I've got an L and N frame .357, but what gets most of my range time is the large bore N frames.
