Washington State Patrol was exclusively 6" 28s from the time they adopted them until the mid 80s when they went to Beretta 92s. They carried 38/44 Heavy Dutys in 6 1/2" bbl length prior to the adoption of the 28s, and .44 Hand Ejectors in 6 1/2" prior to that. I believe the 28 was adopted in the late '50s or early '60s.

Many US police agencies are less standardized in their sidearms than you might expect.

I worked with several officers who carried 6" M28s, while I carried the same model in 4". Both were within specifications for our department.

in the early years of my career i carried a 6 inch model 27, and really envied the guys with 4 inch model 19's. on the range they all envied me my scores.

Thursday i go to see a 27 model and i hope to buy it

The Model 27 is the pretty brother of the model 28 and if it's a model 27-2 they are identical except for the level of luster in the blue and the steel top strap checkering. The Model 28-2 HP lacked the high luster blue and steel top strap checkering of the Model 27-2 otherwise they were identical mechanically.

It is not possible to answer your question. There are a great many law enforcement agencies at several levels (city police, county sheriffs, state police, and possibly some Federal agencies) throughout the U.S. And there is no standardization of weapons (or indeed lots of police equipment) among them. 28s were popular with many police forces before the advent of hi-cap semi-autos, but it was not used by anything even close to all of them. And those that did use 28s could have used (and probably did use) different barrel lengths.

A Denver Police Lieutenant helped me pick out my 6 inch 28-2 because he had one and loved it. He also packed a 45 auto.

In my 32 year LE career i've carried;
Smith mdl 57 blue
Smith mdl 19 2 1/2 nickel and blue
Smith 586 nickel
Smith 459 blue
Smith ? ( old age setting in 4006? Same as CalHigh Patrol)
Glock 22,17,19,23c

Casper Police Department, Casper Wyoming.

We were required to purchase our own sidearms, within departmental specifications. The last revolver carried in the uniform division was a 6" M28 by a veteran sergeant who didn't want to learn new tricks. From what I am told, the conversion to autoloaders was complete about 10 years ago when he retired.

I wasn't a police officer at the time but I was an armed security patrol officer and carried a 4" 28-2 for a couple of years until I got a 4" 686.

I carried a 6" Model 27 in the early to mid 70's. Beautiful piece. A little impractical on the street when running and jumping fences or rolling around on the ground or pavement and tough sliding in and out of the patrol car due to barrel length. That being said I carried it anyway cuz is was so damned good looking. Sold it when our department went to Model 59's. Among the long list of stupid things I have done getting rid of the 27 ranks near the top.

My first duty weapon as an Alameda County Deputy Sheriff (california) was a 6" model 28.

As to your question of grips, the WSP used the factory wood grips on everything. I believe the motorcycle officers had a choice of switching to Pachmyers though.....
