about when was it made?

Can someone decode the symbols under the grips in the pics?

If there are 3 digits after the 237 then it was made about 1975-77. The other numbers are just marking put there by the manufacture for tracking during manufacture.

Any designation of a nickel finish?

None that I can see. There were only 54 brushed nickel 4" 28s and 25 bright nickel 5" 28s ever made and of that less than 20 of those have ever been found.

Saw one at the gun show a couple weeks ago I thought was brushed nickel but it turned out to be Hard Chrome and considering overall condition, I thought the $650 price tag was a little steep.

In my mind it was steep but you see that all the time, often with the word "custom" being tossed around. (smile)
