I went to the range last night to check the sight alignment on 3 10-8 HB's I bought as rental guns for students. These were all PD trade-ins and shot just as you'd expect... perfectly.

I also brought a 4" 28-2 beater I picked up earlier this year. It was carried by a security guard for many years and shows good, honest use. It has substantial finish wear and took quite a while to clean up when it first came home. I sighted it in for .38spl mid-range loads and while shooting, realized just how sweet this gun is. It is truly a wonderful weapon. Sure, it's much bigger and heavier than a .357 needs to be, but man, is it a shooter!

... much bigger and heavier than a .357 needs to be...

Sir, look at the Roman aqueducts. If you want something to last a really long time, over-engineering is a good thing.

JMHO, FWIW.

Hope this helps, and Semper Fi.

I felt the same way about my 28-2 when I shot it a few weeks ago. Such a solid weapon. Mine is a 6" and feels and shoots great. Points well, minimal recoil....love it.

I have talked to more than a couple of guys that said the 28-2 was the best shooting revolver they have ever owned and I tend to agree. Love mine.

My 4" 28-2 never fails to provide a pleasurable shooting experience. It's a wonderful platform for the .357 cartridge, and I greatly appreciate the pure, no-frills, utility of this model.

Designed in the days when slide rules were used and not calculators to determine strengths there was always a bit of extra ability worked into the older designs to account for error. I just love the M28; just a wonderful working piece, a real Merle Haggard of revolvers.

My 28-2 has a 3" barrell. I agree ... it is heavy, but it actually carries real well.
At shorter distances its accurate and just plain shoots great.

I'd like to shoot one that hasn't been modified to compare them.

The 28 had definitely earned a rotation-spot in the range bag.

As I said before, it is pretty beat. There isn't any exterior pitting to speak of that wouldn't buff out quickly and the bore is clean and bright. The cylinder had some corrosion in a few charge holes to deal with when I got it home. I was able to remove about 90% of the damage with a well-oiled SS bore brush chucked in a drill, but you can still see a few dark spots when you shine light directly on them. I was wondering if they would cause issues with extraction and accuracy but they didn't after my limited shooting the other night (50 rounds or so of .38 spl at 50 feet). I was considering using the Brownell's flex-hone tool to polish the cylinders out, but that might not be necessary. I'll heat this gun up with 100 rounds of .357 later and see how she acts.

Gunsmith Andy Horvath lives nearby and he is currently working on two of my guns, a Super Single Six Convertible (3-screw) and a United Sporting Arms Seville 7.5" .44 mag. Both are getting the full treatment of action jobs and refinishing. They should be done this year. Maybe the 28 will take a trip to Andy's shop when the other two come home. If the corrosion turns out to be an issue, maybe a caliber conversion would be in order?

For now, I'll enjoy it as-is.

Thanks everyone

My 4" 7-shot M28 is one of my favorites

Bought it off Gunbroker a while back, uses moon clips. I've hijacked this thread (sorry!).

I'll get some pics tomorrow and start a new thread.

I have a 6" Highway Patrolman I bought new at a dealer in Portland OR in 1963. I was 13, Vietnam was cranking up, and Police were wanting .357's, thus I was shocked when I walked into the store and found both the Patrolman and a Colt Python. My paper route and lawn jobs wouldn't afford the purchase of the Colt @$125, so I got the HwyPtmn for $83. I've scared a lot of jackrabbits and dispatched more than a few with this gun. They are truly great.

Did it come with magnas? My 1977 29-2 came used with Hogues and have replaced them with target grips but now I see so many pictures of HP's with magnas that I think mine should also wear some mags.

No, it came with equally trashed Pachmayr Presentations. They are worn to the metal liner in a few spots. They will definitely be replaced.
