What may be the changes from 28 to 28-2. I have been looking at a shooter grade 28 in a LGS for some 6 mo. It has a screw forward of the trigger guard but none at upper side plate, asking $ of 750 no grips rather than ill fitting plastic from a mattel cap gun. It was accompanied for a time with a 28-2 with the large N Frame walnuts commonly seen, I believe foot ball type. The 28-2 went away at a hunert more coupons price. The 28 shows no signs of abuse, no scratches, locks tight, no end shake, the cylinder spins free and true when open. Just a faint rub spot on the side plate, over all a thin grey finish as expected of the HP. I would use this as a revolver to dispense of full house 357 mag lswc gc loads so as not to be tempted to shoot them in a 19-2 or 66-4.

The main differences between the Model 28 and the Model 28-2 are two:
1. On the dash 2, the cylinder stop had been re-engineered, resulting in the elimination of the screw in the front of the trigger guard.
2. The extractor rod has left hand threads on the dash 2. The Model 28 had right hand threads in that location.

The upper sideplate screw was eliminated in 1956, before model numbers were used. All Model 28s had four screw frames. The Model 28-2 had a three screw frame.

$750 is not outrageous for a Model 28, with either the 4" or 6" barrel (you didn't indicate which one this one has). However, the funky stocks you described would be grounds for some dickering on the price if I were involved in the transaction. :)

I'd buy it. Heck, the Mattel stocks may be worth sumthin'. :) But, I happen to have a variety of N frame grips in my wood bin. But, I do agree with Jack that you should get them to take off bucks for the non-S&W stocks.

These days, $750 for a good condition Model 28, especially a no-dash, with incorrect stocks is not that far out of bounds. Realistically, in today's cash flooded market, $700 would be a good sale price, but if I really wanted it, I would not let a $50 difference stop me.
