Model 28-2 endshake

The endshake on my Model 28-2 is .004-.005. The gap is wider by .001 or less at the 9 o'clock side of gap vs 3 o'clock so difficult to measure exactly. I reload 6.4Gr HP-38 under 158gr plated copper into in 357 case. Is this end shake bad enough to damage the gun with mild loads?

.004-.005" is well within end-shake specifications for any S&W model.

S&W cylinders are not lathe-faced, but are cut from the bar-stock using a cit-off wheel or similar.

If there is only .001" variation in barrel-cylinder clearance as the cylinder rotates this is as close to perfection as you will see in any S&W revolver.

There will be no mor damage done to your revolver shooting exclusively full-power .357 Magnum ammunition. Likewise, there is no reason to not shoot more moderate loads if you desire.

End shake will slowly worsen, especially when shooting full power magnum ammo. As long as you have 0.003" barrel-cylinder gap with the cylinder pushed forward, the revolver should still function. Ideal end shake is 0.001" to 0.002", S&W considers 0.006" to be the point at which it should be corrected.

Thanks for the replies about my recently acquired Model 28. I'm surprised to learn the yoke on this N frame with the huge cylinder is the same size as the K frame Model 10.

All good with those numbers. And judging from my experience with 28’s, it should last you about a gillion of those rounds, at that loading. End shake is pretty easy to fix if you know what you are doing.
