I'm a new member to the forum and need some help concerning a 29-1.
Roy Jinks book History of S&W, on page 221, indicates that the change from a 29-1 to 29-2 occurred at serial #227149. My 29-1 has a serial #229775 Can anyone tell me why their is a descrepancy?
Also what would be the value at between 97 and 98%

Welcome to the Forum

Chuck will probably step in on this one, but the thing you have to remember is Smith didnt necessarily do things in serial number order.

Case in point I have 2 4 screw pre-model guns.
Gun 1 SN# S172439 shipped april 1957

Gun 2 SN# S170894 shipped july 1957

Can't help you much with value but I can tell you not too long ago a pair of Model 39-2s with consecutive serial numbers was found to have shipped 14 YEARS apart!

Also, pictures and a few more details would be helpful. Barrel length, finish, type of Stocks, Hammer and Trigger etc.

The serial number Mr. Jinks is referring to is when the 3-screw frame was introduced as a result of the implementation of the improved cylinder stop and the elimination of the cylinder stop plunger screw. This would normally be a -2 configuration for most guns except the Model 29 which is an exception. However, your 29-1 has a 3-screw frame so it is not really in conflict with the statement. It also has an old style ejector rod with a right hand thread. The Model 29-1 is a complicated affair that is too long for a single post.

I could explain it in detail if you would like to call me at 812-842-0183 some evening (after 7 PM central time).

Tideman44, your 29-1 was produced in 1962 at the same time S&W was also shipping 44 Magnums in Model 29 and 29-2 variations - all 3 models in the same year. Generally, the serial number range that 29-1 3 screw models are found is between S227XXX and S230XXX. The 2 4 screw 29-1s known to date are in the S219-S220XXX range, but also shipped late 1962 early 1963. Don't pay too much attention to serial numbers when it comes to S&W as they should be used only as a general guide when attempting to determine date of manufacture. Welsome to the forum by the way.

I have SN S170863 4 screw pre 29. I am guessing July 1957 also.
