Pretty clean 29-1 has an 8 3/8 barrel came with a presentation case and grips, will get some pic of the case later. The foam inserts could be re-flocked. Overall the gun is in great shape a little blueing ware at the very tip of the barrel.

Very nice, and one of the known 54; one of the 15 with 8 3/8 barrel.

I don't think so! I read the serial number as #S229889. If so, that is number 55.

FB67, please confirm the serial number and do you know the ship date? Nosey people want to know! ! !

The serial number is S229839. It is a great example of a Model 29-1 even though the smooth stocks (circa 1969-1974) are replacements for the original coke bottle stocks.

Just for fun, I researched S229889. It is also a 44 Magnum with an 8 3/8-inch barrel with a bright blue finish. It could also be a 29-1 or a 29-2. Invoices do not list the model variation.

Wow!… Very nice.

I have to ask, FB67, did you realize the rarity of what you were buying, as in 1 of 54, total?
I'll admit, even though I've read that figure before, I don't have it committed to memory. Either way, that's an exciting find!
Congratulations! :)

I'm no expert, but been looking for a 29 - 1 .Where did you find this gun and dare I ask how much. The only one I tried to buy was $5000.00

A close friend was commissioned to sell off a gun collection and this was one of the guns. I paid a fair price for this pistol all parties were satisfied. I do want to get some Coke target grips for it but man those are not cheap, would diamond target's make it original ?

No they won't, but whatever you have to pay for the Cokes will be well worth it. Just swallow hard and pay whatever the price is.
You'll get half back, or so, if you sell what is on it now!

And..... JCELECT who has been posting in this thread will re-flock the innards, and refinish the outer if needed!

$5k might not be too far off if it is LNIB. Without the box/tools/etc. you ought to be able to find one for less. I paid $3000-$3500 (bought another at the same time with some negotiation so how much for each is somewhat arbitrary although the asking price was $3500) for this one with later presentation box and tools about a year ago. Expensive, but the problem is finding one for sale. Good luck.

If you could afford a fair price for that revolver, a set of Cokes is chicken feed.

Did I know it was 1 of 54 nope. Did i know it was uncommon yes.

If only 54 29-1 models were made, how many 29 no-dash are out there?

A point of clarification...Approximately 54 Model 29-1s have been reported by collectors. There are many more 44 Magnums in the correct serial number range that could be 29-1s, but no one has reported them. So, it is unknown how many were actually shipped by S&W. However, I am confident it was many more than the number reported.

In regard to the number shipped that were stamped MOD-29 in the yoke cut, the serial number range is S184000 to approximately S227000. That is 43,000 revolvers including Model 29s, 27s, 28s, 20s, 21s, etc. There are very few Model 24s and 26s, so I am not including them. Based on this, I would guess approximately 13,000 are Model 29s.

Even nice pre-29s and 29 no dashes, with Cokes, are regularly selling for around $2500 or more. Any 29-1 in similar condition should be considerably more, no?

The estate who sold me the M29 found the historic S&W letter for the gun. It did come with the grips that are on the gun.

It's cool it shipped with smooth grips, but probably not those. A gun of that vintage would have had escutcheons that were flush with the wood and not recessed.

Looks fantastic - the grips appear to be similar but not identical to the ones on my 25-3 that shipped in 1976. The RH side on mine is cut out around the big 125th S&W Logo.

Had an expert clarify that the letter is inaccurate on the grip style, it happens. May have found some COKE grips for it.:)

Thanks everyone for the interest and the experts providing accurate data.

Those grips would be close enough for me. . . .until you find a bit earlier set. Might be the only 29-1 documented to have shipped with smooth targets. Nice!
