Hello all,
I am cleaning some guns for a friend that got misplaced in storage. To my horror when I opened the mahogany case with a new unfired 29-2 inside there is alot of rust and the velvet lining stuck to the gun. Where is the best place for restoration and is it worth it? Also 2 other NIB stainless guns have rust on the cylinders. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank You, Jeff

You might want to try some acetone on a cloth to clean the flocking off the revolver. You'll probably have a better idea as to how much the rust has penetrated the bluing. If it's too bad, you may have to have the gun refinished. S&W would be my choice of refinishers.

On the stainless guns, get some Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish, and go to work on an inconspicuous place. See how much it helps. While rust will form on stainless, it may be nothing more than surface staining.

I'm sure there are others here who will have advice you can use. You might also post some pictures, and give us an idea of the damage.

Good luck.

Based on what the members here have shown , the S&W factory is the only way I would go for a reblue , if I wanted the gun to be right as far as market value . Somebody here will be able tell you the price they paid , but it may be that they need the gun to tell you exactly what it will be . These 29s are getting ridiculas in price and I am part of the problem . 1. I always pay too much ,like a fool and 2. I would not sell my 29-2 shooter for a thousand bucks , like a stubborn fool.

I bought a gun that was in similar condition. I cleaned the crud from the lining off with acetone like mentioned above and then took 0000 steel wool with gun oil and rubbed the rusted areas. In my case all of the rust was surface rust and the metal wasn't pitted. There were a few freckles left where the bluing was gone but overall the gun looked great.

If this one is rusted more then that the owner can send it to S&W for a reblue which with shipping will cost around $325 (guess) as the bluing is about $225. If he doesn't want to do that he can apply cold blue after the cleanup and make it a shooter and shoot the crap out of it.
