Greetings!

New to the forum but certainly not to Smith and Wesson.

I recently acquired a 29-2 with an 8 3/8" barrel. It came with an old Weaver base that cradled the frame (did not require drilling/tapping) along with a scope, but the rear sight has long since been lost. I want to convert back to iron sights and found a rear leaf, but all of the small compenents are gone. I contacted S&W customer service and was given the standard message about no longer manufactured parts with a list of websites (Numrich, Bowen, etc.).

My question is if there is any interchangeability between old and new rear sights components. I understand the differences in leaf-type, but I have to believe that there was very little change on springs, detents, sight post, and other associated parts through the years. However, we all know what happens when one assumes, so I wanted to ask the experts.

I appreciate your assistance and look forward to learning more about these spectacular firearms.

Cheers!

Thanks for the welcome as well as the insight. I prefer to measure twice and cut once, and figured there was a wealth of knowledge in this forum.

I "think" all the small parts, windage screw, spring and detente, nut, elevation cap screw, elevation screw, "C" clip sight blade are all common with parts for the next 20-30 years. The body was changed to relocate the mounting screw hole and then in later years the body was changed to a round front base. Check the parts list on Numrich and all should be available. The sight blade would be specific to barrel length.
