29-2 stainless

Hi,

I just purchased a 29-2, with pinned barrel and recessed cylinder.
Pretty normal, but it's made from stainless steel. Ist not nickel, it's ss! Serial N30.....

Does anybody knows anything about such a gun? I didn't find anything in the standard catalog....

It would have to be a refinish of some type (HardChrome..etc) If it was stainless there would be a "6" in front of the 29...629 which shows it would be made of stainless steel. Welcome to the forum!

Magnets and stainless steel. Just because a magnet sticks to a piece of steel doesn't mean it is not stainless. Hardly. While the 300 series stainless steels are pretty non magnetic (austenitic) , the 400 series stainless steels (have about the same attraction to a magnet as regular steel (martensitic). Guns are made from stainless in the 400 series and will definitely be attracted to a magnet.

I payed about 900$ for it. What do you think, too much??
The prices here for original ones start at 500$ (poor condition), up to 1500$ (Mint condition)

P. S. I also agree that the revolver is probably chrome plated.
 
Welcome! The price range you quoted is very similar to here in the US. The finish is very durable and rust-resistant so it will be good for outdoor use.

And yes, it is a genuine Smith & Wesson. I think I see German proof marks on the rear barrel and upper frame? Enjoy!

$900 would be on the high end here,but I don't know how hard they are to find in Austria to guess at a value.

Yes it are german proof marks...
So the finish was made at S&W?

wow, looks hot, ratchets look pristine and so do the stop notches...whatever it is I really like it a lot. In that condition with factory hard chrome finish I'd be all over it. I would not worry about that one bit if it shoots accurately
 
I doubt the finish is factory S&W. The industrial hard chrome finishes are applied by numerous different companies. There is something in my way back memory that kind of recalls an electroless nickle of one model for a brief time, but I don't recall what it was.

good info above, as to just which model is, appears to be similar to the 'Metalife' SS from Ron Mahovsky, we did many of them through him back in the 1970s, looks just like stainless but is harder and wears better,,,nice gun
 
I am not the first to say it, but that is clearly NOT a stainless steel revolver. It is a carbon steel revolver that has been refinished by some after market refinisher. Among other things, on a stainless revolver of that era, the hammer and trigger would have been flash chromed. Sorry.

No, that finish was not applied at the factory.

Your revolver would have left the factory either blue or nickel

One of the telltale clues that a revolver was plated outside of the factory is that the ejector star is also plated. Factory plated firearms have blued ejector stars.
 
That looks like a really nice revolver. I would love to own it. $900 is not too much.

But in your case somehow I can't help thinking a .44 Magnum Desert Eagle would be more appropriate! ;)

I hade one in .50AE! But I had too sell it a couple years ago....
Unfortunately..... One day I'll have one again....

The only thing I can say is if I were looking a shooting carrying tough revolver that would get the job done I would definitely get that bad boy for a paultry 900$ .If you halfway take care of it you can carry it shoot it use be proud of it and one day pass it to your grand kids and on and on but I like them 29s I love the collector grade guns all blue and pretty and such I truly enjoy looking at others pictures but my guns are tools mostly like a great saw or hammer I need em tough ,to be used ,I love that gun man be happy ,happy ,happy it's yours ,hey take it out and shoot it and give us a range report maybe with some pics ,I promise I'll look at it ,forget the money part it is well more valuable as a tool than what you paid ,will it ever be a collectors item ?Who knows but if it is it won't have to be handled with white gloves on because that Armaloy is some tough stuff.
 
Good looking revolver. It's almost certainly hard chrome. Finish is after-market. It looks like nice work. I wouldn't be a bit worried about the price. It's in line or maybe just a tad high, but not agonizingly so. What you need now is a nice set of stocks of your choosing. Nill certainly makes some very nice ones. Congratulations on your new sixgun! :)

I love the gun too, it's my 3rd 29-2... The first was a blued one with a 6" barrel. The 2nd one was a 8 3/8" in nickel. Both sold over the years.
Unfortunately we don't get any carry permit in Austria, at least its very hard or almost impossible.
I have a pair of original grips ( coke bottle ) but the butt pin is missing.
I'll try to get a new one....
Also i' m looking for grips made from buffalo bone, like fake ivory...
Tomorrow I should get my latest buy, a S&W Victory 38, got it for 30$!!!!!! But it's missing the butt swiffel and the original grip panels.
I wanna order all parts together save shipping cost......
