I have a 29-2 nickel with the AHP prefix. I am guessing based on what I've read that this is a 1980 model? I'm working on insuring my collection as it has grown into far more than a basic homeowners will cover. I realize we may be ballparking here without getting a letter.

Thanks all in advance

The Standard Catalog says AHP is 1985. Which doesn't really compute for a 29-2 which, I thought, were all N prefix SNs except for the early Ss of course. The last of the Ns, again according to the Standard Catalog, was used in early -3s which went to AAA in 1983. I have a 29-3 with N prefix which should be 1982.

Are you sure it's stamped 29-2? Pinned and recessed?

Welcome to the Forum! We'll need pictures and/or more information to help you with this mystery. The Model 29-2 .44 Magnum revolver was manufactured only from 1962 to 1982 (when the 29-3 was introduced), and would have had either an S- or N-prefix serial number. The 29-2s have a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder holes. As 22hipower informed you, the "AHPxxxx" s/n that you reported was for 1985, and would not in any way relate to a Model 29-2. Even 29-3s and some 29-4s had N-prefix s/ns. You will need to double check your model number and s/n (inside the yoke and on the bottom of the grip frame), and the caliber (right side of the barrel). To the best of my knowledge, S&W stopped making some nickel revolvers around 1986. However, there are some Product Codes (e.g. 101210, 101212, 101214) that pertain to 4", 6", and 8-3/8" bbl. Model 29s from 1984-1991. I do not know which variation of Model 29s those were (-3, -4?).

Gentlemen, my apologies. At the tender old age of 44 I am still in the early stages of denial of the fact I need reading glasses. While I will admit I have some, I neither carry them around nor use them other than at night in the bed. In this case, well, I just couldn't read it well enough. It is indeed a 29-3 and I feel like a moron for having even posted this knowing better based on that 3 letter prefix.
I have a couple N prefix nickel 29-2's and that one mentioned above is a 29-3 nickel. I started out looking for a 29-2 in blue and about that time is when the prices went into the stratosphere. To date I have yet to acquire a blue 29-2. I won't go so far as to call myself a collector grade collector, but I do love my smith revolvers. Think I have like 10 or so at this point.
Anyway, again my apologies for my shortcoming on this one. I rarely post because you guys are so thorough that I rarely need to ask anything.

No big deal, don't worry about it. I'm a lot older and feel the same way about my hearing aids. . . .spend a lot of time saying "what?" which irritates folks I suspect far more than your question. Questions like this one keep us on our toes so we don't mind them at all.

Good luck with the 29-2 search, there are lots out there.
