I have a 5" 29-5 Classic and have a hole in the front sight and a pin on the side. My question; can it be removed and can I get a gold bead front sight. Where can I get one if it is are removable.

If you have a pinned front sight, you can use an SDM sight, sold by Brownell's, Midway, and probably S&W, as well as direct from the manufacturer. I have one on a Model 25. I have to say it looks cool and nostalgic, but I really don't like the sight picture as you need the sun behind you to make the bead really effective. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for that info, I looked up SDM, but how do you take the sight off. It's pinned, but what do you do with the hole in the front and which sight. They have two profile on the base that goes into. One is kind of half circle and the other has hookes on the base. I hope this isn't confusuing in my question.

Marsh,

your gun has a front sight that is held in by a spring loaded plunger similar to those on Ruger Redhawks and GP100's. It isn't pinned in, and is easily replaced. You will need to find the correct one though. I am not sure if anyone made aftermarket sights for the classics like yours or not. Give S&W a call and ask if you can still get the one you are looking for. I believe that you just press in one direction or the other (I can't recall right now, since it's been a long time since I owned mine) to remove it.

Push the sight blade back, pull up on the front, and then it let it forward slowly, as it's under spring pressure. To put the new one in, reverse the procedure - put the rear of the blade in the slot, push backwards, put the front of the blade down, and release slowly. A great system.

SDM makes the sights for both the pinned in sights and the removable spring loaded sights as the other posters have mentioned. There are pics on their website.
