Hi, I just picked up this 29 no dash serial number s1928xx. The serial numbers match on the frame, cylinder and ejector star. The gun shows a touch of holster wear on the tip of the barrel, front of the ejector housing, front sight.and just a touch on the front of the cylinder and frame. The 29 has a super smooth action. The grips are in very fine shape with no major dings or wear. The only problem is someone put a coat of varnish on the grips which turned a yellowish color on the madallions. My question. Is there any way to remove this varnish without hurting the grips? DSC_0009.jpg

hi hog! Try using Pinesol on the medallions, let it soak for a while, then wipe it off. I use it often to strip paint from plastics. If that doesn't work, I would try a product called Citristrip, I have had good results with it before, but it will take the finish off underneath the varnish as well. I think it would be safe on the medallions judging by my past results, but I would be very watchful.

Maybe a little acetone on a Q-tip will clean off those medallions.

That's a beautiful Mod 29 and the holster looks special too. Did it come with the gun and is it maker marked?

Acetone is probably your best bet, and try to keep it off the wood otherwise you may get some discoloration. An old tooth brush would help to lossen it up as well.

..I don't know why some fellers shellac their grips .

You did good as many who try to take off the varnish end up screwing up the wood ; and that sure is a nice looking gun .
Maybe you should sell it and get one with more " original "
grips :)

how much would you want for it :D
