found a 2nd model hand ejector that has smith and wesson factory re blue and added micro target sights and other than that the gun is in good shape. the gut wants $600 is this a fair price?

You need to tell us a lot more than that. Based on what you told us, all I can say is between $100 and $800.
But if you can tell us:
the caliber (2nd Mod HE 32, or 44),
barrel length,
rebarrel or not,
the serial number and whether or not it has matching serial numbers in all 6 places including inside the right grip,
proof of the factory refinish/rework date stamped on left side of the grip frame under the grip if any,
condition of the gun in approximate percentage of finish,
Micro Sight Co. site or S&W 'micro-click' sight,
we can value it.
Good clear photos of gun and markings are always helpful!

A Micro sight added to a fixed sight S&W would kill the deal for me. It would lesson the value as well.

A micro sight would not kill the deal for me if it was part of a complete conversion package that created a serviceable target revolver where there was just a service revolver before. Last year I paid $500 for a nicely converted .455 HE/Second that went from British contract revolver to factory-converted .45 Colt, got a first-rate blue refinish, and micro sights front and rear. It has absolutely zero collector value now, but it is a great big-bore range gun.

it is a 44 special with a 6.5 inch barrel, all parts are orginal other than the grips, i don't know if the numbers match, but the are period correct. it has the date on the gun of the factory re blue job, and the finish is probably 90%. the sights are micro sight co. so what do you guys think? thanks
I'm Sorry but that's confusing: I don't know how you know the parts are original if you don't know if the numbers match????
The date on the grip could be the sight work, the refinish or both.
Are the grips original STYLE S&W or plastic or what? If S&W wood can you describe; type of medallion, round top Service grips, Magnas or targets?
You got me up to $300 so far...

when i was talking about the numbers not matching i was reffering to the grips, all the other parts on the gun match, i just talked to the guy and he says he has a smith letter that has the re finish and the sight work on it. the grips are period correct smith and wesson grips, but the numbers on the grips don't match

That looks like it would be a good shooter. However, it wouldn't appeal to most collectors.
The third models and first models are valued higher than the second models.
If you want a shooter, I'd try and get it for around $500.

They are "Service" grips and appear to have the sunken gold medallions of the 1910 to about 1920 period. They are valuable in their own right. And if you give me the number on them and the number on the gun (or partial #s), we could establish if they could have been from the same period. But the gun was made from approximately 1915 up until the beginning of the war. So if the gun was from after 1920 they are from different periods. From 1920 to about 1930 the grips had no medallions and from '30 to the war they had 1/2" diameter flat silver medallions.
As was said the gun won't have much interest to a collector except one who might appreciate a fairly original gun and with factory documented refinish and modification. What was the date that the factory did the work?

thanks i know it doesn't have any collector apeal, but i am only 25 and i got this sickness from dad and grandfather. i really like the older smiths and just don't have the money. i really want a 44 special, because it is a great caliber and it will go good with some of my other older 5 screws. thanks for the help everybody. i think i will offer $500

oh yea and the work was done in 1953
With the documentation of the modifications, I think that gun actually does have a little collector value. $500 would be a good price, maybe a little more if you really want it. $500 is what I paid for my converted .455 HE that, apart from caliber and some modern target stocks, is pretty much the spitting image of the gun you are looking at.
