I'm looking at a 2nd Model Single Shot. The SN is 19xxx but my reference books say the serial number range is 1-4617. What am I missing?

Are you sure the serial number isn’t 19xx and not 19xxx? Posting a full serial number would be helpful.

Positive. Unfortunately, I don't have additional pictures available but it is definitely a 5 digit serial #. Thanks

I can only guess that this is a factory 1st Model frame that was leftover from the first model that had the recoil shield machined off to be used in the 2nd Model S/S series.

There are a number of first models that are machined like yours, with the groves in the sides of the frame like yours. I track serial numbers for these guns to see if a pattern develops. It's hard to do when the sample size is so small. I will look for a thread that I started that discusses guns like yours.

Found it. Since this starting the tread below I have found a few more.

Single Shot Transition from Recoil Shield to Groved

Wow. That seems like a lot of work to get one to look like a 2nd model. Was that done by S&W or after it left the factory?

MT99 - Is your gun frame machined for the cylinder hand and cylinder frame? Some first models with the modified cylinder shields have them, have one machined, or have none machined.

S&W was answering the call for a single shot target pistol when they came up with their 1st model. I thought it was a strange attempt with what they had, but the refinements soon came along. The hand and cylinder stop can be a little puzzling.

Yes it is. Not my gun yet though.
