I didn't and won't get the shots. I'm not worried about getting Covid and it irritates me that people say I should get the the shot too keep from getting Covid and infecting other people. If people are worried about getting Covid let them get the shot and they will be immune from me if I get sick. If the shot doesn't make you immune why get it. Larry
Just did a quick search on smallpox. The last case of smallpox in the US was in 1949. Think it said the last known case in the world was in 1980. This is because the smallpox vaccines prevented smallpox from continuing to spread.
So a reasonable argument could be made, is being made by some now, that everyone being vaccinated is necessary to erradicate the disease.
But, that ain't gonna happen.
I read yesterday that scientists no longer believe that herd immunity for covid is possible. This is because with the increased contagiousness of the new variants, we would need 80% of the population to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity. But it is unlikely that 80% of our population will want to be vaccinated.
We are not unique in having a large minority that does not want to be vaccinated. France, for example, last I read has a higher percentage.
I think the good news, though, is that the vaccines do work. It does look like, as we understand it today, that those of us who believe in the efficacy of the vaccines will require yearly booster shots to maintain our immunity, but that seems a minor inconvenience to me.
And since we are now, at least in the US, very close to a state in which everyone who wants to be vaccinated will be, I am okay with this situation. I mean with how I feel about those who don't want to take the vaccination.
(Not that anyone who doesn't take the vaccine needs my approval, of course! Just saying it seems less of a problem to me than it did, looking at it this way.)
Larry, I think, is correct in that those of us who are vaccinated are protected, and that if others don't want to be vaccinated, well, that is their choice to make.
I hope we send our unwanted vaccine surplus abroad to help other countries who have populations desperate to receive them. It would be good for world health, and good for our reputation.
