3 1/2" Model 27 with diet coke grips

I was admiring this one and thought I'd post it again. One of the last grip repairs forum member "Gaterbater" (Swamprat on Colt forum) did before he sadly died a couple years ago. These were cut down $3 grips I found in the gun store. I was told here they were originally cokes. So I sent them to Gaterbater giving him a smooth pair of dinged up Paul Hurst clipped frame K frame grips and a set of chipped diamond K frame service grips (both also $3 each) in trade to clean these up. They feel fantastic in my average size hand.

They nice, and would fit me well too.

They're still cokes just modified cokes. I've done similar with other grips. I always start with already modified grips to get them cheap like you and not modify untouched grips; there's only so many in existance.

I did a couple of sets of K-frame target grips like that back in the 80s..... proportions and looks are good and the grips loose a lot of worthless bulk.

Thanks for sharing. The top picture is a great sample of ingenuity. Makes a lot of sense in that many hands don't extend below the bottom of K- frame grips, or N-frame.

Those look great on the short 27! Reminds me of when we were about 18-19 years old, another forum member (who shall remain nameless) and I decided to cut down a set of factory N-targets for his model 29. The idea was to shorten them a bit at the bottom then do a round-butt treatment. This was when you could find take-off factory grips in most any gunstore for cheap - everyone was putting Pachmayers on their revolvers. We procured a set of grips and proceeded to attempt the first cut - on a radial arm saw. The results were, shall we say, spectacular. Said grips literally exploded, sending pieces of goncalo alves shrapnel flying all over the basement workshop. Lesson - use the right tool for the job. A radial arm saw is NOT the correct tool for shortening a set of revolver grips.

Excellent save on an otherwise ruined set!
I like it! Maybe I should have gone that route.
I have a set that was cut off flush and square with the grip frame that I spliced matching rosewood on and cut the border and checkering to match. They aren't perfect, but very presentable shooters.

Those chopped cokes look great on that 3.5"er. Here's my set of "diet cokes" on a long 27-2...

When I got them, they were heavily modified, with an attempt at some finger grooves. But after some time with Keith Brown, they came back with a little narrower pattern, a beautiful look, and a great feel.

Those are grips that Smith & Wesson should have been making for decades, instead of forcing people to add ugly grip adapters to their magnas.

I have some that are similar, except they are patterned from a pair by an unknown maker. I had forum member schofieldkid81 (who has since disappeared) make me several sets in both N and K size. Originals are at the back on my target Triple Lock.

They are thin enough at the toe that there is a cutout designed in. Nothing there ya don't need.

Those are great grips. They are even more compact than mine because the front bottom of the grip frame is exposed like those ones Elmer Keith had on a couple of his guns by "Kersarge" or something like that. He's a real artist.
